It happens all the time, and isn't new.. thankfully its usually accidents regarding bb guns that parents buy their kids and not high powered pellet guns, or we would have way more deaths! Part of the problem is parents, they dont teach their kids how dangerous the bb guns really are.. more of a buy it and then tell the kids "you cant use this unless we are with you" then they put it in a closet somewhere with the bbs. Guess what happens when the kids are home alone or parents are busy? they go get that bb gun and play with it, I'm sure we ALL did or could if we had the opportunity. I was in a hunting family so we were taught safety right away and the bb gun (daisy camo pump) was locked in the gun safe with the real guns... I think this really put in my mind at a young age that they are in fact weapons. I couldnt get to the bb gun, couldnt get in the safe, or I 100% would have been taking that thing out and shooting birds in the back yard and strolling around the neighborhood shooting cans and what not with friends.. thats what kids do. I dont think we would have shot each other, but an accident with it would definitely have been possible.
Any parents out there, dont think your kid is better than you were... kids are kids, they will lie to your face and say they wont touch it and then go play with it a month later when you let your guard down. Same kids that say they will never drink until 21 or try drugs, what is it now 70% of highschoolers admit to trying alcohol and 40% have tried controlled drugs/tobacco? And these are near adults who are a lot better decision makers than 5-14yr old. Odds are your kids are like most kids when you aren't around.. lock up the air guns. I am not saying most kids would shoot others with a bb gun, far from it, just that accidents do happen and kids are curious and still learning... Get two or more together and you have recipe for disaster.
