I've SCORED, prime Ground Squirrel hunting...

Oh rats, it's going to be touch and go on the weather, rain in the early am up to about 10. Of course it's just a guess 24 hours out but it's not looking good right now. But even if it is raining, I can still use the time for sighting distances at the usual burrows. Then have breakfast with my friend.

Update, well not happening, decided to go to the ER to see if I was having another Cardio Event, 7 hrs later, nope still good. But it seems the rain will be where I shoot longer than I thought and it's getting colder so, the smart squirrels will be in their burrows, kicked back chilling. Hopefully next week.

Wahoo, I now have permission to go whenever I want to a Horseman's Association grounds and reduce the ground squirrel population. My guns are dialed in, my Trigger Cam is working. If it's not too windy or pouring rain, off I go on Wednesday AM to see if it all comes together.
Just curious, how did you go about getting permission? I'm in Sacramento County and there is a few Horseman Assocation's close by.

Have a friend. Was going on Sunday’s but then I got hold of a past president who was there and was trying with a cheap pellet gun. Contacted her for during the week and off I go.

Definitely, I usually do most my squirrel hunting from a bass boat. The mother load lakes are loaded with ground squirrels on the shore. It would be nice to shoot on solid ground lol.
In Calif, 'solid ground' is a relative term. Especially now with the bit of dampness we are having...THANK YOU MOTHER NATURE!! We had a tree fall on a gal hiking last week, feel for her family. It's getting a touch soggy and we have more coming.

Central CA, Corcoran I'm sure it's going to be a bumper crop of soft targets this year too with more water.

Well, in theory, assuming more storms don't come plowing in, Monday is suppose to be nice and sunny and cool, wind is going to be questionable, perfect for those pesky Mooske and Squirrel, only no moose. So I'm bringing my faithful retriever/spotter, Pete, they'll have the gate open for me. It'll be interesting, the back half of the property is flooded but it's nothing but caved in tunnels anyway, it needs to be tilled. I'm zero'd with my Maverick VP .25, got my RMR 26gr slugs working well, along with the usual suspects for pellets, 33.95's. My Maverick Compact .22 has decided not to leak...I must have found the issue, a microscopic scratch on an o-ring in #2 reg....So for giggles I'll take it also. And if I can figure it out, my TriggerCam is playing well with others so there may be some video documentation to humiliate me. And for giggles Pete may figure out his drone, that'll be extra interesting.

Congrats looking forward to seeing some videos of your hunt.
You are assuming I don't mess up the recording, I've been practicing turning it on and off for recording. This afternoon I'll be back with the cordless hole punch seeing if I can see the TINY lights in the bright sun. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it.

Ok, the good the bad and the ^%$# UGLY. Weather was awesome, literally zero wind, just a very light occasional breeze, I had my Maverick VP .25 and my Maverick .22 compact, Saw a total of 5 squirrels, they must have been on spring break. We lazed the ones we saw and, OH DAMN they are at 100 plus yards, guess who wasn't set up for it? I had to take some ranging shots and just as I completed a survey crew set up right behind where 2 of the squirrels were popping up, so scratch them. Had another pop up at about 130 yards, made a wild guess on elevation missed then tried again, it sounded like I connected but....when my buddy went out to retrieve it it ran off. Thought I hit another in front of the road crew but my buddy said it ran off. Scrounged in a few trash cans and got some cans and paper plates to see if I could get a 100 yard range, also a few small pieces of pottery a small limb and some beer cans, just nailed them but when it came to actually hitting one of those damn furry targets, not happening. Tried the .22 compact and it wasn't playing well for some reason, then a couple of pellets got jammed, I brought my Delrin rod to push them out but one was in so scratch that gun until I could get home to take it apart, note, it was really wedged in the beginning of the barrel. The .25 was doing ok then it went screwy, on the paper plates I had no idea where in the heck the pellets were going. I tried some RMR pellets, fyi they make them for FX, I found this out when I called for help on speeds and general setup. It seems that FX designed the Superior barrel for these pellets. The guy at RMR put a Lothar Walter on his impact 3/4" groups at 100 yards. He recommends the .22 pellets, they shoot better than the .25's. I'm going to spend the bucks on a new barrel, just can decided on a regular Superior or a Heavy Superior, the difference is twist rate, the Heavy is a faster twist rate. I haven't reviewed the videos but not much to show so may not even bother. I think the Trigger cam worked fine, shall see. Going to try again next week or maybe Friday earlier.

Well, out I go again tomorrow, sadly my retriever won't be joining me, he's not feeling well. So, I'm schlepping the stuff myself, going to KISS it and only bringing one gun, so I can lighten the load in the backpack. Triggercam is charged and focused, bottles charged, Even have some targets to set up to make sure I'm zeroed. Weather is suppose to be good.
