N/A IZH 46 vs 46M

M model (top) pistol has a longer compression tube, and shoots faster; so a shorter "lock time":

From PA article linked above:

"Difference between the IZH 46 and 46M

There is really only one significant difference between the standard IZH 46 and the more powerful 46M and that is the length of the pump mechanism. The 46M pump tube is almost an inch longer than that of the standard 46, resulting in a longer piston stroke that compresses more air. The result is a muzzle velocity of about 500 f.p.s. over 425 f.p.s. for the standard model. Other than that, the two airguns are identical.

Power

The thing that sets the 46M apart from other single strokes is its power. It develops a true 500 f.p.s., with lightweight lead pellets. That’s 75 to 100 f.p.s. faster than other single strokes. The manufacturer claims 410 f.p.s. for the 46 and 460 f.p.s. for the 46M, but I have done extensive testing over 20 years and have found my numbers to be more representative.

Accuracy

You have already seen the stunning accuracy of the MP532 air rifle. The IZH 46 pistol also has a hammer-forged barrel that gives similar accuracy. It rivals the accuracy of vintage target airguns like the FWB 65."

I have owned both in the past and currently own a 46M. I've also had the opportunity to shoot an original 46 as late as last week. Cocking effort seems about the same but I do thing the fit and finish of the newer models are a touch better than the earliest guns. Accuracy, is a wash in my experience. Both are capable of one hole groups at 10M with the right 7 gr pellet. (BTW, The guy that owns the 46 shoots in the 180's with it regularly. He's at the top of our league ranking.) Maybe because I'm used to shooting pistols in the 460-530 fps range but he only "negative" I see on the original is somewhat anemic in velocity. The difference in report is immediately noticeable and its pellets barely punch through the cardboard backers at our range ( His showed a very consistent 365 fps over my Garmin C1 radar last week.) . That said, in a (free) world where 46's of any flavor or vintage are scarce and getting scarcer, I wouldn't hesitate to buy either at a good price. As an aside, I really find it hard to believe that someone hasn't figured out how to build/assemble these pistols outside of Russia so they can be once again marketed to the world. They really are in a class of their own when it comes to value vs accuracy potential.

weehooker,

Air Venturi had a copy of the 46M made by Alpha Precision. Unfortunately also a Russian company, so no more imports of that either:

Considering the cost of the AV version, when available, I think people decided that at less than half the price, a PCP pistol such as the PP700 made for a more a attractive option. Or a Huben GK1 at twice the price...

I bought my Baikal 46M for 500 bucks 6 years ago from Krale in NL, and like it a lot.

The breech seals can be replaced by O rings according to maxtrouble and marflow777:

The air tube seal is available on eBay, as mentioned above.

I dont believe they are high failure items, in my experience anyway.

Ydunn.223 has both the IZH 46M and AV46m for sale in the classifieds.
