Results January TEXtreme Bench-Rest Silhouette Match Report

The watch-dog... doing what watch-dogs do.

Friends,

Apologies for not getting this match report out sooner. Unfortunately, due to a continuing barrage of semi-emergencies😖, it’s taken this long to move the MR to the front burner of priorities.

Nine shooters contested LAST Saturday’s TEXtreme Bench-Rest Silhouette matches, shooting a total of 23 scorecards in our three classes in chilly, ever-tricky winds. Thankfully the temperature rose as the matches wore on, at times the winds as well.

Five shooters contested the (100 foot-pound limit) Slug class, in which, as usual, the high score of the day was posted. Derrick Wall’s awesome 37/40 put him well clear of not only the rest of his class, but all shooters in all classes. Derrick shot an Athlon Cronus scoped .22 Scout Evo, pushing slippery 40 grain Altoros slugs 900 FPS for the coveted Match Winner hat-pin. He also nabbed a ten-in-a-row rams pin. Fantastic shooting, Derrick!

New to Bench-Rest Silhouettes, Greg Surber came second in Slug Class with an excellent 32/40 score, also winning a ten-in-a-row rams pin. Greg used an Athlon-scoped Brocock Ghost, shooting the same Altoros 40 grain slugs; albeit only 890 FPS. Excellent shooting, Greg!

As usual, the 100 Foot Pound (pellet) class attracted the most entrants; nine shooters shooting a dozen score-cards. Unless I’m mistaken, in the best performance of her relatively short airgun competitions experience Susan Gehrig whipped all those boys! Uhhhh… ummmm… okay, all WE boys.🥴

Susan’s fine 34/40 was a relatively comfortable Match Winner margin, especially considering who came second. Susan shot a Sightron S6 scoped .25 Daystate Delta Wolf, firing 29.5 grain AEA pellets 955 FPS to capture the 100 FP Class Match Winner hat-pin. Great shooting, Susan!

Derrick Wall’s 32/40 was good for second place. And although Match Winner hat-pins are the only placement awards in our BRS competitions, DW nevertheless managed to add two more hat-pins to his trophy shelf…I mean, trophy case… I mean, trophy room… I mean, trophy museum by nabbing ten-in-a-row pigs and rams hat-pins with his 100 FP Pellet gun. Correction- with his same Athlon Cronus scoped Scout Evo, but with a .30 caliber barrel; no small trick considering he had to swap the barrels back and forth to shoot each of four different kinds of silhouette animals. For better perspective, that entails not only four barrel/caliber swaps during the course of the 40 shot match, but scope settings for each barrel at four different distances. Suffice to say DW was the airgun competition equivalent of a one-man band all match-day.🥵 Good show, Derrick! In fact, I haven’t seen such an interesting display since my last ‘visit’ to Midget…😱

NEVER MIND!

Three shooters contested the 35 Foot Pound (pellet) class; just enough to award a Match Winner hat-pin. Jim Clarke captured that with a 19/40 score, shot with his Hawke scoped .22 Daystate Red Wolf shooting 18 grain Air Arms pellets 930 FPS. Good shooting, Jim.

Happy Shooting Y’all,😊

Great shooting all. As for Derrick, I thought it was impressive the first time I heard this when I only thought he swapped calibers one time… but having to go back and forth throughout the competition…WOW!

Even more impressive is Derrick's success despite losing three of his ten minute window after the 'Fire' command to not only take sighting shots but also ten shots for record, when multiple assailants distracted his barrel swapping with queries and conversation. Apparently it was only intervention by the superhero known in TEXtremeland as the Byrdman🦸‍♀️... OOPS, correction-🦸‍♂️ that rescued Derrick's remaining seven minutes.

Although the Byrdman prefers to keep a low profile, usually operating under cover of anonymity and darkness🫥, he nevertheless seems always there to rescue airgunners in distress. In aforementioned case, Byrdman slew multiple assailants with no more than a question- "Hey Derrick, aren't you supposed to be shooting right now?" 🤤

Let that be a lesson to all ne'er-do-wells who would distract the unwary from their noble missions- BYRDMAN SEES AND KNOWS ALL, OMNIPRESENTLY STUMLING INTO ACTION WITHIN THREE MINUTES TO PROTECT INNOCENT VICTIMS.

Suffice to say Byrdman has saved my 🥓 more times than I care to admit. Apparently he derives his superhuman powers from a strict Carnivore diet.

Then there’s that Russian Car Jack to deal with. At least from rests are allowed.

I wonder if American car jacks are allowed. ANTIQUE American car jacks, in fact-

Technically a field target knee-riser, it never occurred to me to repurpose my Model A jack into a unipod for bench-rest. Thanks Mike!

I'll have to ask the match director if it's allowed. Correction- I'll have to lobby the MD to allow it. I have it on 'good authority' he responds favorably to positive incentives.✋💵

Agreed! He looks pissed 😡

He’s actually wondering 🤔 what barrel to use in his new EVO. Also, he just had knee surgery and is on crutches. Probably hurting bit too‼️

I also noticed the look on Eric's face in that photo, but chose not to mention it. FWIW, he's a really nice guy.

That said, perhaps the fact it was all he could manage to manipulate his equipment, much less move it to other benches between relays, exacerbated by not only witnessing Derrick's superhuman one-man-band efforts, but Byrdman's superhero rescue of said superhuman, probably did little to particularly 'perk-up' Erics outlook.

Think Nancy Kerrigan watching Tonya Harding's Olympic performance... from a hospital bed! 🤬

Bad analogy, Ronaldo! I didn’t have any thugs take Eric's leg out homie!

Where was this match held? Very nice Range !

The TEXtreme Bench-Rest Silhouette matches are held quarterly at the Central Texas Rifle & Pistol Club, 11 miles from the Rancho Robinson venue where all TEXtreme Field Target matches are held (on the other eight months). Map of the area attached, with the route between the two venues in green. Other landmarks are Lake Whitney just north of RR, Waco south of CTRPC, and I-35 to the east. Longbow eye candy also attached, LB.
