JSB 25.4 grain at 911 fps or JSB 34 grain at 820 fps?

@Emu Which magnification are you usually using for shooting paper targets, more specifically 2” - 4” bullseyes? I shoot mine within 65 yards at 8x magnification. I’m usually standing behind a tripod. I know it sounds weird to shoot small targets this way. There’s no way I can remain still enough using high magnification. Also as a hunter I don’t want to eliminate too much of my field of view using higher magnification and I know that you hunt. Reading this thread it seems that @rsfrid can use higher magnifications because he shooting from a bench where movement is minimal. @Emu are you also shooting from a bench or table?

I am a hunter, not an EBR shooter. I have never been in a shooting competition with Air Rifles. I normally shot with the scope at 10 X.

When I was young I indeed use to shot very good with shotgun. I used to compete a lot in pigeon shooting. I was champion of my State one year and next year I ended second because the National Champion won me. The money of the first car I bough without help of my father came out of my shooting skills in the competitions.

Here it is the five shots group I made at 70 yards without wind. Same rifle 10X:

Let me tell you what is my way of thinking in regard of what I have seen in the forum.

The idea of a competition is to get to know who has better skills on an equal environment.

You may not achieve that with your targets because they discriminate two groups of people:

a) those that are not young enough to be able to see a so bad designed target; and

b) those who may not buy an expensive scope with 40 X super High Definition visibility.

Then your completion are not to compare skills but deep pockets to invest in the hobby.

PD.- Just to clarify I a not a critic of spending money in this hobbies, I have 6 Daystates and 5 Airgun Technology rifles, plus many other PCP's..... But I have never bought nor use a bipod nor have ever rest the stock of the rifle on a bag over an bench.

@Emu well I figured the difference between the results and what I was reading in posts by you and @rsfrid was the magnification and style of shooting. Now we know for sure that high magnification is a determining factor that varies between the two of you. considering your shooting styles I understand why you both use the magnification levels that you do. I also can understand why it’s easier for you to see a crosshair styled target as opposed to a dot or circles using a lower magnification at 70 yards. I frequently shoot 50-65 yards at 8x magnification and I don’t see the finer details printed on some of the targets. Yesterday I shot at 55 yards and couldn’t see a lot of hits shooting the dark body on rat and crow paper targets. Using my spotting scope I could see them just fine. Another example is when I hit a bullseye on a small target. Especially if it is a black/dark colored bullseye or isn’t a splatter burst target. If the bullseye is black then the hole against my pellet trap will be black as well. Ultimately I just want to hit the kill zone on an animal. So 1” - 1.5” is usually good for me. I don’t want to have to shoot an animal more than once. Shooting more than two shots on an animal means I don’t need to take that sort of shot again without more practice to improve my shot placement or I may need a larger caliber. I think we may have this in common. I’d be pleased with your 0.66” grouping at 70 yards. Good shooting there!

Considering what you’ve stated, what @rsfrid has said and demonstrated, and from what I see, I think it’s safe to conclude that shooting the 33.95 grain (34 grain) JSB King Heavy diabolo pellets in the 800-900 fps range handles wind better than the 25.39 grain JSB King Diabolo pellets shot at 900+ fps at longer distances. Now the question is which does your gun prefer, the regular King Heavy pellets or the King Heavy MKIIs?
