There might be a good reason why those slugs are not well remembered and I am sure Lewis and Clark didn't use "pellets" as we know them today. They used lead balls.

It seems to me that the original 0.20 cal Sheridan pellets were solid slugs with a dished base and a small driving band around their base.

of course, a chunk of lead is how guns work ... but modern 177 to id say 25 'pellet' guns are specifically engineered and set up for pellets unless you go high end .. then its assumed you know what your doing, afterall your spending several 'grand' on a gun, you have to be pretty brilliant .. right .. lol ..
