Kalibrgun Cricket II WB .22 has arrived!

The sidelever can be switched to either side, Jimmy.

Wonder is there is a set screw on both sides of the lug that mates with the linkage. I'd clean those bore threads & set screw threads to add some Vibra-Tite medium (blue). I wouldn't want that ever happening again.

Yup, there are set screws on both sides. And vibra-tite was exactly my though too in an effort to keep this from happening again. I just want to get some magazines through the gun to make sure that my linkage arm adjustment is where I wanted it to be.

And here's their page to confirm that the side lever IS switchable:

https://kalibrgun.com/weapons/cricket-2-standart-wb-cal-55-22/  (Cocking system Side lever - switchable(left/right)

I am left-eye dominant, but I'm honestly not in any hurry to change this. Having my left hand on the grip and trigger has always felt "normal" to me. No doubt that sometime in the future curiosity will get the best of me!

Matt, I greatly appreciate all of your up front and honest review work. As far as the linkage, I can't say for sure what caused it to come loose other than the grub screws weren't properly aligned or tightened. I can assure you of this, I will be double checking every Cricket bullpup to make sure that does not happen again. I think this is a small glitch in the learning process of making a modified cocking system work reliably.

I will be sending you two tuned and polished magazines to see if you think they make for an easier cocking stroke over the untouched magazines. These magazines will have the detents ramped and polished along with the center bore being polished, I have found it to make a noticeable difference here, I value your evaluation.

Thanks

Charlie Frear, Georgia Airguns

Thanks for the kind words 😁

And this is exactly the added value Charlie brings to an already great product! The advice you and others offered here on the Cricket platform has been helpful beyond words since picking up my new-to-me .25 Cricket.

And now it's a pleasure to give back (pay it forward?) in some small way chronicling my experience with the Cricket II!

I did a quick side-by-side chrony test today between my Prochrono Digital and a cheap illuminated chrony I got from Aliexpress (with JSB 18.1s).

With the Cricket II at room temp (66f) it was shooting at an average of 958 fps according to the Prochrono and 940 fps (286.5 mps) according to the Aliexpress chrony. In each case the muzzle was just a few inches from each chrony. I did my earlier test letting the gun acclimated to the 40f degree outdoor temps and positioned further away at the end of my picnic table so it was about 5-6 feet away. Those earlier tests showed an average of about 920 fps with the JSB 18s before the linkage issue.

For comparison, here are the numbers from the testing Charlie did with various 18.1 grain pellets:

FX = 942 fps
AA = 938 fps
Edgun = 920 fps

I only shot one string of FX pellets and they were shooting about 15-20 fps slower than the JSBs. For me the FX 18s were shooting around 905 fps when the the JSBs were again shooting in the 920s.

Conclusions from this?

  • Like many guns, the Cricket II is sensitive to temperature changes and could see 30+ fps drop in velocity in near-freezing temperatures.
  • There's a pretty clear difference velocity between the various branded JSB 18.1 grain pellets (JSB, Air Arms, FX, and Edgun). I have a good supply of JSBs and a few more Air Arms and FX 18s to test in greater detail.
  • I'm going to assume my Prochono chrony is giving me more accurate readings than the aliexpress chrony. I will just need to remember to add about 18 fps (or 5.5 mps) when it's too dark out for my Prochono to see the pellets (which is it's main weakness).

Things that make you go "Hmmmmm......"

Question of the day... Is shooting in terrible weather great practice or a waste of perfectly good pellets?

This is what 50 yards looks like in a lake effect snow squall.

It does not look as bad in the video because I placed my camera about mid-way between my bench and the target!

The results were decent given the conditions!

And the cheekpiece is screwed down.

Nice little improvement.

Yes, the cheekpiece is very well designed - especially considering what's on my .25 which I assume is probably an older model. I had a couple of close calls when I got my .25 where I went to grab the gun by the cheeckpiece only to have it slip off and (ALMOST) drop the gun! This design was only held on by a little natural clamping action. The plus side of this older style is that it's not as angular as the nice wooden one on the Cricket II and feels a bit more comfortable...

I thought the new models were coming out with a square barrel shroud assy?

Hi Octavius, thanks for your suggestion.

Experimenting with various settings is certainly something I'm looking forward to doing, but first I want to do a full round of accuracy testing with various pellets and also do some extensive chrony testing with both the HS and regulator in their original configuration.

Once I do that and document the original settings, then playtime will begin!

I was dead set on getting a R5M but now I'm considering another cricket.

I think Rick Eutsler came up with the catchline "It's a great time to be an airgunner!".

While I have no first-hand experience with Edguns, no doubt they're fantastic too... But I don't have any baseline for comparison outside of the specs and what I have read about them here. I will say that the Edgun Lelya 2.0 had my attention for a long time but I kept coming back to the thought that the mechanical advantage of a sidelever action vs. a straight pull action has to be pretty significant.

So far I'm impressed with the Cricket II. I've only had it for a little over a week, but I've been most impressed with how un-fussy (is that a word?) it is with velocity and 18.1 grain pellets. I have not had any truly nice weather yet to truly see how accurate the gun can be - it's been cold and windy here - but my gut feeling is that this gun has a fantastic CZ barrel! Charlie has been great, and I think the value (experience and parts supply) he brings to the platform shouldn't be discounted.

So yeah, it's a great time to be an airgunner!

Thanks for the updates and allowing me to live vicariously through you. I've been patiently waiting on my power tuned .25 to get shipped. So hard not to call and ask. I paid on the 30th so tomorrow is my three week point. Told myself it would be easy to wait. I lied. Feel like a kid waiting on Christmas

No doubt it'll be worth the wait!!!

Sorry, couldn't resist! 👍

Lol! Your freaking killing me here! Already put a W.A.R valve I had laying around in one of my .25 marauders and tuned, re sealed my BSA sportsman hv and recluse, stripped and stained factory stock on my semi auto marauder, and purchased, received, and customized a 1322 back pack build to pass the time. Running out of projects and still don't know a ship date. Hopefully soon? Had eleven guns to do his mojo on before mine. Anyone want to loan me theirs for a couple weeks?
