AirMaks Arms Krait- still a roll of the dice?

I did message Rick rehm a couple times asking about his reg creep and first shot accuracy issues. He seems to think it’s all been cleared up.

That being said, after watching airshootist video on the krait, and the quality of machining problems, I don’t think I’m quite ready to pull the trigger.

My short Krait is alive and doing well.
AirMaks did come up with a different regulator. That at least in my case...works very well. Shot to shot has very equal pressure. Letting the gun sit overnight, or a month, very minimal pressure difference. After sitting a month (on purpose), the first shot was a little low on pressure. But the following shots were well within acceptable variations, as noted on a digital pressure gauge on the regulator side.

I wouldn't be afraid to buy one, as long as it was from a dealer...just...in case !

No problem. New models also available.

I shoot from my left shoulder so I wouldn't get a Krait. I don't want a magazine in the face (so FX bullpups are also off the list). I might get a Katran. But I don't really understand the complaints about the regulator when there is no discussion of adjustments to the hammer spring. My guns are all sub $500 so in a different price range but I have had first shot velocity issues when the hammer spring was not well matched to the regulator setting. Once I fixed that the regulators work well. For instance, my most recent shot string from my P35-22 had 23 shots with ES under 6 and std deviation under 2. The first shot was 16 fps lower but this decreased to under 10 fps on subsequent shorter shot strings. I'll check it again and if the first shot is still low, I'll probably increase the hammer spring a tiny bit. My point is just that when a reg is not performing how you want it to, I think it is normal and expected to try adjusting the hammer spring. But I watched the videos and there was no mention of that. I do not understand why. I had a similar issue with my P35-25 when I got it but the hammer spring was not at all well matched to the regulator. Once I fixed that the shot strings have not had first shot deviations.

The "sub 12" channel did a tear down of a Krait and a Katran and he though the regulators looked good.

I also find my ES and std deviation are a lot lower with pellets that my guns shoot accurately. The H&N Baracuda Match are the best I've found in my P35-22 and I mentioned the low ES and Std Deviation, I looked but did not find strings with other pellets in my spreadsheet for this gun but I found a shot string for my P35-25 with pellets it did not like that was almost 60 fps ES versus 20s for the H&N FTTs it prefers. I couldn't tell in the videos that were critical of the Krait if they were shooting the guns favorite pellets or not. I don't think we can learn much about the regulator shooting pellets the gun doesn't like.

But mainly I think the owner of a Krait that saw a first shot velocity variation of concern should try adjusting the hammer spring before screaming over the internet about a bad gun. Maybe he did and didn't mention it but that was not the conclusion I reached watching the video. I would expect the manufacturer to tune the gun better than that but there is a detailed review of the Caiman X where the tune doesn't seem the greatest so maybe RTI doesn't spend a lot of time on this. I find tuning my guns to get the most out of them to be enjoyable. But I would agree with the complainer that the Krait is expensive enough it isn't unreasonable to expect it to arrive with a pretty usable tune.

Krale dropping Airmaks is disappointing. It means they are not selling well. They've discounted the Katrans too. Doesn't look like anybody has any Caimans (Utah included). I think the AEAC review is a lot more well reasoned and he suggested how he would change the tune if they were willing to pay him to do it. The "Sub 12" guy says he's never sent a gun back for warranty work and never will. He takes them apart first thing including a R10 with a bunch of tamper protectors on the screws. He liked the Katran. Built a custom stock for it. The reviews overall seem to be quite positive with one notable exception. Since most of us mess with our tunes ourselves I don't get being totally turned off by a bad "as received" tune.

I don't see this as a "roll of the dice" situation, however. All the reviews I've seen have said they are accurate and none reported leaking or anything like that. The AEAC review was of two guns both tuned in a way that I would admit doesn't make a lot of sense to me. The tunes were the same. So it isn't like you could get a good one or a bad one. But it is highly likely you will need to do some tuning. Adjusting the regulator pressure and the hammer spring. You might have to drop down to 250 bar fills (which I would do anyway, 300 bar would mean using a compressor all the time). Especially at the price Krale is asking for the Katrans they look like a bargain for an upper tier airgun. But it seems you will need to plan to "tune it yourself" to get the most out of it.
