I remember he or someone who knew him going on a rant about leaving the forum because some of the members were too critical of FX airguns. Found a FX strokefest community to join or something. Either way, not a cool thing to do. Is there any way it got blown out of the packaging during shipping and the box got taped back up?

Not a chance. It was well packaged, and not damaged or re-taped. Obviously, the thief put some accessory on his Notos and there was an interference issue, so he took a rotary tool to it to make it fit. These are pics of the box it came in:
