Leaking…..How Much is Too Much?

Let say right away that I am new to PCP airguns. Not having a personal history to draw on, I would like to hear your input to this concern:

I took delivery of a Benjamin Marauder around the beginning of July. It has been a good introduction to PCPs and has done well with the reduction of the gofer problem. I use a Hill pump and like to keep the pressure above 2500 psi. I haven’t shot it for about a week and today, the gage is showing less than 1500 psi. Is this typical of a PCP air riffle or do I have a problem with a new gun?

I'm new to PCP's too. I had a leaky experience with Marauder that I bought new at the beginning of June. One thing I didn't realize, but guys at the club told me. When you fill the gun the air is heated from the pressure so when it cools, the pressure will be reduced a bit when you come back to check it. So, they suggested fill it, then top it off a few hours later. Then check pressure a day or so later to rule out the cooling effect. I also tried the bubble solution test at and around the fill port, but wasn't leaking from there. Anyway, mine was a true leak, I was losing about 400 PSI a day, and not sure where it was escaping from. Looks like you lost nearly a 100 PSI per day so yours sounds like a real leak too.

Not sure where you bought yours, but I got mine through Pyramid. They were super cool and offered a replacement or refund (within 60 days of purchase). They even sent a prepaid FedEx label.

Good luck,

Todd

I had this problem with a couple of my Marauders many years ago. The problem was a defective batch of air pressure gauges that were leaking through the tiny weep hole that they have on the back side of the gauge, not the base where the threads are, although that is still a good possibility. I bought some replacement gauges from mcmaster.com.

I made some of my own leak checking bubble solution by mixing liquid dishwashing detergent with water. I can't remember exactly which proportions I used but it was probably something like one part dishwashing liquid to 3 or 4 parts water.

You can take a piece of soft tubing such as latex or perhaps even vinyl and hold one end near your ear and use the other end to probe around and listen in various places. If your ears are good you may be able to just put your ear up to the gauge and hear it hissing.

Check the fill probe. You can try putting a drop or two of Crosman pellgun oil or other silicone oil in your fill probe before airing up to lubricate the check valve.

IMHO, I'd get with the vendor and tell them what is happening right now. Do not pass go, do not collect..... Let them figure out what to do which should be sending a prepaid shipping label to return it. When you buy a new rifle it should be right right when you receive it. You should not have to do anything to make it work correctly including holding pressure. I bought a Aspen from PA and it had problems with the pump and check valve right from the start. It also was my very first PCP and I just didn't want to wait for it to go back and a new one to be shipped back to me. About a year and a half later I have a$400 paper weight. Lesson learned!!! If something is not right when I receive it it goes back.

Update:

I double checked the pressure on my Marauder this morning, and as suspected, it was down about 300 psi in less than 24 hrs.
So, I phoned AOA with the intention that I would trade this defective riffle in on one that was not leaking.…..no go. I was informed that they do not accept repairs for Crossman. When I brought up the fact that I had the riffle less that 30 days and their “Tearms & Agreements“ allows for a “Money Back guarantee” with-in 30 days….the response was “sorry.”
I found this in contrast to the accolades I had read concerning AOA‘s customer service. If it is a matter of Crossmans’ prefforence, then perhaps a little disclaimer stating such in the fine print of their website would have made a difference in my reaction.

So, I phoned Customer Service at Crossman and they emailed me an UPS shipping tag. The rep estimates they will have the riffle for 3 weeks……

I will be careful to check who is responsible for warranty repairs before any future purchases…..
