Learning from Classifieds

It seems lately I see more “parts” being sold or being wanted. Nice to see folks make do with what they have, rather than buying the latest and the greatest as I’ve seen in the past.

Lots of movement on optics and optic related parts, also.

I feel bad for the folks that upgraded to a certain bling part, only to have one better come along by another manufacturer, and now that bling part that we all know cost some coin, doesn’t sell. No one will touch it as there’s something better that came along

I've sold more than I bought. The last few times I've been looking for a rifle the sellers want barely less than new. In that case I'd rather spend a couple hundred more for brand new.
Yeah I never understand that. 15-20% off is typically the standard I think. I just keep scrolling when I see that (lol I was scrolling anyway).

Not only that but seeing multiple over priced 3 year old airguns that are almost the price of a new one is funny. Especially when the company has a 3 year warranty and will fix almost anything for free. Plus, that particular air gun has been upgraded multiple times over the years. Way too many 0/0/0 Feedbacks trying to sell air guns. I ask one of these guys how old his FX was and if he has the original receipt and he said, "I believe so." Then I ask if their dreamline had the new superior liner, power plenum and dual transfer port, and he replied, "I believe so." I really am in the market to buy a used Dreamline, but I'm not buying a used one for almost new price and I am certainly not buying one from someone who can't answer simple question about their own airgun. Sometimes I can't tell if its a scam or they just don't know anything.

I've purchased a few previously enjoyed guns via one or two of the guys that hang out in here and have been really happy with what I've gotten. I would not - or would be ~really~ hesitant - to buy one from someone who couldn't definitively tell me what or how one that he might be selling is setup as @jasmlowe says above. ( "I believe so." ) C'mon - if your hanging out in here - you're a gun nerd. I have to believe that most of the "good guys", of which I think most that hang around in here are, ~will~ know EXACTLY how a given gun is setup, what barrel it has on it, reg setting, etc . . . I'm up to 10 guns now and I can tell you pretty accurately how each and every one is setup. ( except for maybe my AA S510 - damned thing has always been boringly good from day one right out of the box and for all intents and purposes - non-adjustable anyway - lol )

I bought and sold a ton while searching for what I liked, if I bought new and sent the item back I was going to lose restock fees so I figure just pay less and help out another air gunner and if I like it, I got it for cheaper than new. Since I have found what I like I now just view it for smoking deals on some gear I could possibly use or ammo.

I've had positive experiences so far buying or selling. The like new pricing some people wnatnis ridiculous. If the gun is new and still in the return policy period... send it back and get your money. Why waste even more time and effort trying to sell it. That stuff seems fishy.

Another weird one I just experienced. I put a WTB add up for anyone wanting to sell a BSA buccaneer. A member who only had 10 posts messaged me with an email to someone else who had one for sale. I emailed and they immediately said 200 bucks and send it on zelle or venmo I think. Anyhow, I asked to see the gun, he said it's a 177 buccaneer... ended up being the old style break barrel.
I told them I wanted the newer pcp version. They told me they have that as well but in 22.
I smelled the fish from a mile away and ended communication. They emailed me the next day with just "Hello!!" I didn't respond.

Be careful out here gents!

I have bought & sold. Probably have bought more than what I have sold. I enjoy looking often, as you never know what pops up.

I have noticed lately as well the premium price being asked for stuff. I’m not much of a barterer, so I just move along, but would have probably bought it if priced right. I try to price used items at around 25% off if in excellent condition, otherwise I will ask for around 33-40% off, and more if it’s fairly scuffed up.

I've never bought/sold an airgun on the classifieds, and likely never will. However I do check it out frequently to see what's selling. I guess it is my way to gauge what consumers move along.

Anyone else do the same?
things I'd never purchase from the classifieds: Guns, barrels, pellets, slugs, etc. I don't trust anyone for just pawning off bad chit. most of the time you can get a new one for the same price as they want anyway. plus, if somethings wrong you can send it back. new is king unless it's just and accessory or something.
There is always a reason someone is selling and if it's something major they'd happy with it our they wouldn't be selling it. it's that simple.
Trust no one. period

I've bought and sold. Probably more sales than purchases, but I've had mostly great experiences in both directions. I'm pretty picky on my purchase and skip ads that are asking too much or don't have photos. I've also had some very good trade experiences as well.

I prefer to purchase from those who I am familiar with on the forum. But, if I don't know a user I will scan through their post and thread history to gauge if they are legit or not. I still have faith in mankind and trust what people are selling and condition unless my gut instinct tells me otherwise. Sometimes people just buy an item and it isn't for them - has happened to me on more than one occasion on both new and used purchases - just comes with the territory not being able to handle every item in real life before buying.

YMMV - but be diligent and one can make some exceptional deals.

What I have noticed is that this is the time of year where more of the ones I am interested in appear.
I spent my 2022 money, so better planning for 2023 is in order.

As far as price, it will be difficult for me to spend the $ needed for a higher end rifle, so I will again buy used. But I want more of a bargain than $200 off the price of a new $1,500 gun. Sellers price them as they will, and I am fine with that. I can wait for the deal that suits me. After all, I first need to figure what I want next.

I do look at most adds just to see and judge the price landscape.
