Learning from Classifieds

Not only that but seeing multiple over priced 3 year old airguns that are almost the price of a new one is funny. Especially when the company has a 3 year warranty and will fix almost anything for free. Plus, that particular air gun has been upgraded multiple times over the years. Way too many 0/0/0 Feedbacks trying to sell air guns. I ask one of these guys how old his FX was and if he has the original receipt and he said, "I believe so." Then I ask if their dreamline had the new superior liner, power plenum and dual transfer port, and he replied, "I believe so." I really am in the market to buy a used Dreamline, but I'm not buying a used one for almost new price and I am certainly not buying one from someone who can't answer simple question about their own airgun. Sometimes I can't tell if its a scam or they just don't know anything.
How many people know all about the engine in their car vs just know how to drive it? For every person here who knows everything about every rifle they own there are probably 10 who just know how to shoot it and that's it. I had some guy not buy a scope from me because I didn't know if it focused down to 10 yds. Well I don't ever shoot at 10 yards so who knows. Most people also never keep receipts or original boxes so that is not unusual. If it was not for the classifieds (plus other places) I would not have the collection I have since 5 of the 8 rifles I have are used.

I've got some great deals, some good deals but so far no bad deals either buying or selling on AGN.

I've bought and sold. Probably more sales than purchases, but I've had mostly great experiences in both directions. I'm pretty picky on my purchase and skip ads that are asking too much or don't have photos. I've also had some very good trade experiences as well.

I prefer to purchase from those who I am familiar with on the forum. But, if I don't know a user I will scan through their post and thread history to gauge if they are legit or not. I still have faith in mankind and trust what people are selling and condition unless my gut instinct tells me otherwise. Sometimes people just buy an item and it isn't for them - has happened to me on more than one occasion on both new and used purchases - just comes with the territory not being able to handle every item in real life before buying.

YMMV - but be diligent and one can make some exceptional deals.
Same here. I have bought a ton of stuff and sold quite a few airguns. I've only had one "less than perfect" transaction, and even that one was not too bad, just some bad communication. I do make it a point of checking out a person's posts before committing though, and I shy away from anything that is either overpriced, or priced too good to be true.

Pay attention to the whole "story", i.e. look at the persons feedback, but also their posts. Are they always getting in (verbal) fights with others, are they disagreeable. Does the person on the whole appear to be a jerk? If so, I stay away. Life is too short to waste on jerks.

(By the way, I do not have to agree with their point of view in the posts, it's more about how they go about their discourse rather than what their point of view is that matters to me. A little healthy disagreement is a good thing in my opinion. Hell, I've been married for longer than most people have been alive, and I promise you, I don't agree with my wife on MANY things).

I disagree with that. I've been on airgun websites for 22 years and the average air gunner is a fairly intelligent person. Buying, selling and trading airguns is a more intelligent group of people overall than in the powder burner world. I have talked to several people on AGN, Airgun Warriors and the Old Yellow Forum on the phone and they are very intelligent group. I have bought, sold or traded more than 150 times over the years and I learned the hard way years ago to walk away if they can't answer your questions, because if not, you're about to be disappointed with what you're getting.

I to have been on airgun sites for over 20 years to all the same places you have been and I sell on all of them not just AGN and agree it's good to talk to people if you can about a transaction and if you get a bad feeling walk away. However you get what you get when you buy used there is an inherent risk to doing that buying something from someone you don't know.

It's much riskier with spring guns which is most of my experience since there are a lot of home tuners out their who can ruin a gun and it's hard to tell from the outside with PCP's I think you can be more confident that what you see if what you get.

In my experience all the people I have bought or sold from been very honest and the pictures speak for themselves so I am not one to ask a lot of questions but again if you get a bad feeling about a transaction best to not go thru with it.

I think many airgun consumers are poorly educated - they get sucked into the YouTube hype on the latest or most powerful etc…. Most people buy into the dreams of having the time to shoot squirrels, plink and play and perhaps tinker. Not long after buying the new toy they develop buyers remorse or realize they have no time to play with a $2000 dollar toy that also needs maintenance. Thats a lot of money sitting unused … they sell, they repeat adnauseum … in the end it’s all good… this is how some of us learn.

I have learned to be wary as I’ve seen several hacked accounts rip people off. Have to be careful. Prime example is the wildcat mk3 compact 22 with mods just listed for like 700 or 750 (forget). Buyer be careful there. That’s a steal just from which end is the question. Lol
I just looked at that and was wondering why the price was so low! The seller has been around a while, with a history of message posts, but not much in the way of feedback. I never even thought of a Hacked account! Of courses, maybe he just wants it gone and needs some cash for Christmas. Still, $700 for a current model Wildcat is very low.

Yeah seems a hacking would be tough with dual authentication now but yeah seems too good of a price.

It turned out to be an attempted scam. Crazy that is still happening with 2 factor authentication. Be careful everyone. Remember if it seems to good to be true it probably is.

Man it's kool to hear you all talk about the old Yellow. I really miss that site. I know the new Airgun Warriors is it now but it was fun talking to all the guys from the Yellow. I also did many many transactions both ways from the Yellow. My forst PCP's were the P-Rod and M-Rod's which I still have they were tuned my Paul in TX. Most all my early day PCP's were all tuned by someone.

Here is where it all started for me in the PCP world and still got them today. Yes they have been highly customized and tuned. Red .22 and Blue .25

They will be the grandbabies some day.
