Let's talk fitness. Yes - it matters. What are you doing to stay in shape?

Hi all
I've spent most of my life on the wrong end of a shovel or Barrow.
Digging trenches by hand for cable ducting and civil engineering.
And go to the gym 4 times a week.
But ended up with back problems so gave it all up as it's a young mans game or is it lol.
As bigragu found out humping heavy thing about catches up with you and eventually wears your back out.
And as you get older the worse it gets.
I truly sympathise with you my man as its utterly frustrating and basically knocks the stuffing out of you.
I cannot shooting from standing position as my back just goes on one.
My right arm however is like popeyes from swaging slugs lol
So I take my hat off to bigragu for overcoming all the pain and suffering he is going through" and still wont be beaten back' a true warrior in my book.
we all take just being able to walk for granted as he says?
I'm sure you have high and low days bigragu" so when you're low just come on here and I'm positive the nation will get you back to the summit where you belong my man😁😁😁👍
Ps QBALL your a star

When I was 14 my doctor told me I will never be able to work. Tried to join the army during Nam era twice, got as far as taking off my shirt. The Navy took me( a little falsifying on medical records)for 6 years submarine duty. Then a decade as a carpenter followed by retail til retirement. 3 slipped discs one surgery later I am still here. retirement gig is working at the local dump which allows me anywhere from 7 to 10 miles walking per day.
I’m 68 and can run circles around the younger ones.
Thankfully my diet is good and I am in a good environment.

Check it out!!-
Today, I decided to park further away from my house after shopping so I can walk the extra steps to burn more calories!! I’m doing eeett!!

Finesse is a luxury, in my opinion.
I'm healthy, but with swing shift 7 days a week up to 12 hours now and other crazy schedules, I've worked to make a living. I can't say I care what's good for my fitness.
I've got where I am with blood, sweat, and tears, and I'll die a wore out old man.
Yes, the companies I've worked for always preach finess when it's good for the company 10% and production 90%.

I do basic barbell strength training 2-4 days a week, mixed in with some cardio on recovery days. I train hard, but don't do long sessions.

It's easier to stay in shape than trying to get back into shape. I'd see this all the time in the military, where some struggled twice a year to pass a fitness test. I have experienced it myself with career changes, kids, and most recently the pandemic. But the benefit of muscle memory makes it much faster to return to a previous level of fitness, but unfortunately it still requires effort.

While this is true, it is important to remember that it gets harder to gain strength as every decade passes - not that it it can't be done, but that it will take much more effort to get back to where you used to be. And eventually you'll hit an age where your workouts only let you maintain the strength you have but not gain anymore (which beats the alternative of losing it all by not working out) - and then after a while longer, you will be losing strength and capability even as you work out.

This is the reason one should build strength and stamina now - whatever your age or current condition - so that you are more capable later in life as you begin to lose capability.

Here is an interesting anecdote: my father, who is 82 and in good shape, is an outstanding and avid golfer. He was telling me about a round he played not long ago that was a little slow mostly because he was behind a group of four golfers, all of whom were in their 90's . . . my comment to him was how improbable it would be to find almost anyone that could play in their 90's several decades ago, let alone a foursome. How great is it that we are having people able to still go out and play in their 90s? If you want to be able to enjoy the things you like now when you age, you have to be really fit in your 50s and 60s to still have any capability later in life . . .

I'll tell y'all, keeping 5 acres of weeds knocked down with just a weed wacker will definitely keep ya in shape. You know, kinda slightly bent at the back. My fenced part of my 40 acres is covered with rocks and a lawnmower would last all of 20 seconds if I tried to use one. Oh and I live at 5270 feet elevation and I'm 71.
