Leupold EFR on an air rifle?

I've seen some folks whose opinion I genuinely respect suggest a Leupold EFR (Extended Focus Ring) scope for air gunning when the shooter is looking for a light, compact, high quality scope. I love Leupold. I have one on a powder burner. But all the Leupold EFR models I've seen have the simple duplex reticle (no hash marks) and are not "clickable."

Example: Here is one listed on eBay as an "Airgun Duplex Scope."

Please help me understand how we'd use this scope on an air rifle when switching distances given the fact that we're dealing with an exaggerated trajectory, can't click, and precise holdover isn't option? I know I'm missing something! Thanks!

I have a Vx3 4-14x which I had the custom shop change out the reticle to one with a busy wind holdover one (I forget the name). If I remember correctly I think I had them change the fixed parallax to 75 yards too from 100. I really like it! Glass is nice and the scope is really light. After the custom work it made the scope pretty pricey but I'm glad I did it. The only thing I didn't like about the scope I had changed out (the reticle)

I have a Leupold 6.5X20X40 MM EFR scope on my FX Royale 400 .22 caliber air rifle. It has the duplex reticle and I use the posts on the cross hairs for estimating hold overs. I use it for squirrel pesting primarily and shooting distances from 10-40 yards. I have also used it for 50 yard Bench Rest paper targets. Don’t like the AO on the front of the scope, as it is very awkward for hunting, but I’m used to it. The glass, brightness, very clear focus and light weight are superb. It is a 2FP scope and I prefer a FFP for hunting. I also leave the magnification at 10X a majority of the time for hunting between 15-35 yards. If I see a squirrel at longer distances, by the time I increase the zoom and AO adjustment, the squirrel is long gone. A side parallax would be much easier and faster.

For me, I do better with hash marks on reticles for Bench Rest shooting between 50-100 yards. It’s difficult to rely on holds using a duplex reticle for scoring and more precise accuracy.

For my use, and given the challenges mentioned above, it is still great for pesting at shorter distances but I won’t use it for longer BR or plinking distances. I prefer the Athlons and Sightrons for that, and the Duplex reticle without hash marks is too difficult estimating holdovers at longer distances.

I picked up a 6.5X20 EFR at a gun show several yrs ago that was used and an excellent buy. That was back when I shot a lot of rimfire matches. When I got into airgunning I shipped it to leupold and had mildots installed ,use it on my .177 Regal squirrel hunting Love it!

Thanks Matt, no wind in the woods to deal with, long shot on a fire trail, normally don’t try that distance with.177 but that day.... I was in the zone !

Gunship, if the price is right and we know the quality of leupold then go for it. Like one guy said earlier,”If it don’t work out for you then sell it.

I find 1" tubes appealing and just the right size.

That Leupold is quite long, but it looks at home and alluring on top of that AG of equal caliber, sir ☝️

Wait till Custom Shop reopens after the Covid settles. You can click it reliably for now.

I have a 60 yard parallax non AO Leupold Freedom Rimfire incoming with holdover Rimfire reticle we shall see after I reparallax it at airgun distance.

Cheaper than the EFR had to try it.

Is it the 4x28 FX-1 Rimfire scope? I have been looking at one for a short-range HW90 hunting gun I have, and will be very interested in your take.

Don't buy it yet yours has a 60 yard parallax (like the one I got coming).

HW90? I would spend a little more for a VX Freedom EFR 3-9x33 try get one for under $350 or $299 from EBay by bidding on auctions or MAKE OFFER option or SWFAs 10% off sale (when they have it).

I've got a Clearidge 3-9x32 on it now which works really well, I guess I'm just chasing ounces that I don't really need to be concerned about. The Leupold 4x28 is 4 ounces lighter than the Clearidge...I mean really, what is 4 ounces on a 9 pound gun! :)
