Long range clicking experiment

I'm going back to my WFTF roots so I've been doing a lot of practice and setup work. I read something from someone that made me think of a little experiment.
My scope (Falcon T50) is very good at ranging to 50 yards, but its a little iffy ranging from 50 to 55 yards. I decided to do a little math for shots over 50 yards.
My POI in inches at 50 yards is -2.15. At 55 yards its -3.16. So an inch difference in drop from 50 yards to 55 yards. This translates to 11 clicks. Figure most targets over 50 yards are going to have a 1 1/2 inch kill zone. Let's be kind and figure I'm shooting a 1/2 inch group at 50 yards. So I'm trying to put a half inch circle into an inch and a half circle, but the center of the circle may be an inch high or low. I think this translates to a 1/2 inch vertical randomness to a 1 1/2 kill zone.
The plan is to treat anything over 50 yards as 52 yards, which has a POI of -2.53 inches and 37 clicks. Then I will aim for the upper half of the kill zone. Not top edge, just the top half. I think the tendency will be to miss high, but since most of my long range misses are low, this may balance things out.

I think this will give me the best chance at hitting most targets over 50 yards. I'll try this at the next shoot and see if I have consistent high or low misses.

Share your thoughts, but remember I'm clicking and shooting 12 foot pounds.

I think you’re on the right track.
Something a fellow shooter and I do for practice is put a target out for each other at an unknown distance (to the shooter) with a KZ of a Troyer in the high twenties to mid thirties. Typically, I have him put mine out from 40 to just under 55 yards and almost always 1-1/2” KZ. An MD may put out one at 55 but most are going to be just shy of that. It helps me train my brain to not assume targets that appear to be 55 are probably not 55.
Good luck and keep us posted.
