Long Shot on a Gray Squirrel

My dog spotted this squirrel beyond 50 yards. If heard it moving around probably with some others and thought they might be another type of animal. When I saw the dog was locked in I started scanning the area through my rifle scope. When I spotted the squirrel it was on the ground and sort of tough to see. By the time I got my reticle on him, his tail was facing us. I took a Texas heart shot and dropped him on the spot. It literally just fell over. Since I’m training hunting dogs, I took them over to the squirrel and praised the one that alerted me first. They were later rewarded with squirrel meat.

Below is the squirrel. It was shot with an Edgun Lelya 2.0 in .25 topped with a 3-12x44 Vector Veyron FFP. I shot a JSB King match diabolo 25.39 grain pellet. It entered through the right thigh and did not exit. There was blood coming from the mouth, so I assume the pellet reached at least one lung. Its internal organs were a mess.

For me, 50 yards is a long shot with a Lelya.

It’s amazing what that Texas Heart shot does.. The 25.3 might be my favorite long range pellet. It hits hard down range

@A.G.R Not a shot I’d typically go for, but I do weigh my options with what’s presented. If a shot is there, I’ll likely take it. This one shocked me to see the squirrel just fall over with no other reaction. For long-range in .25 I prefer 34 grain pellets.

Great shot. I tried a shot from the rear with my 177 and it did not turn out so well. The squirrel fell and I'm sure it died (my dog found it later) but it crawled off and hid, probably under a bush. But I would take a shot like that again with one of my 25s, probably even a 30+ fpe 22.

I shoot 25.4s in my Avenger in 25 and 34 grain in my P35-25. Both selections are based upon accuracy. The P35 struggles to get the 34 grain to 800 fps but I will happily trade a little velocity for better placement.
