Looking for a quiet 25 cal???

bigbuck28,

For me, "quiet" is relative. What are your parameters? yards, acres, miles?

A few details I have learned for my "quiet" needs at short distances which I define as up to 25-50yds in my City neighborhood.

Having a "tuned" air rifle is the first place I started for "quiet". There are many posts on how efficiency and "quiet" go hand in hand.

All my squirrel mitigation has been done with a few different "tuned" airguns, all of which were <90dB's.

  • Benjamin Maximus hunter .22 w/tko LDC, way quiet.
  • Benjamin Marauder .22 , more power and 50% quieter than the Maximus.
  • FX Dreamline .25 w/Donny FL set at .17/.22 or Low for the lowest dB and highest FPE at any distance to 50yds than any of the other 2 airguns. Period.

What do others think? The parameters are endless as you will hear.

I'm liking my "quiet" .25 for whatever comes my way. Power and quiet to 50yds for me. Boom done.

Know your boundary parameters, pick an airgun that suits your style and price. Tune it the best you can and ask questions if you don't know. Decide whether it works in your environment.

The shroud unscrews but you leave it and remove the shroud endcap screw on the silencer added onto the shroud with a threaded adaptor. I had several 25 Marauder and as others suggested if you find a used one in a bullpup stock at a good price that would be good too. YO.

Mrod in bullpup stock would be the quietest solution, but finding a good one for 6 Bill's or less isn't easy.

Only problem with the standard Mrod, is that it's a heavy long assed gun. And while it may just enough to bridge the gap until funds can go to a higher end gun, unless you're really good at diy - boarderline machinist, you have to buy aftermarket parts to make the Mrod perform.

With a Kral, it's going to give you a higher shot count at the same power right out the box, and in a lighter and compact package. You can either add an adapter or use moderator directly on the threaded barrel. If the factory power isn't enough, you can easily take it apart and with a hand drill easily open the ports and make more power. The only thing you need to buy are more orings.

I have Kral's and a Mrod, the Kral's are way easier to work on.

But my Mrod is the quietest AG I own, but admittedly it's a money pit, but it's been more of a hobby project build thing..

For a quiet .25 I would offer up FX Royale 300 and Artemis M22.

This particular Royale seems to have fallen between the cracks but I love mine. It is shrouded and whisper quiet (and accurate of course) outta the box. It has a 400cc cylinder with plenty full power shots (instead of the Royale 500 bottle). The barrel is 600mm and the action is the same as the Royale 500. It is a fairly long gun but light weight and offering great balance. Krale sells it for around 1k EUR.

As for the Artemis M22, that 400EUR shrouded shooter is probably my favorite. I tuned it to 70j and it gives 20 very accurate 100m shots with JSB Exact Heavy II (which are also the FX favorite). I replaced the factory reg by an Audrius. After moving the shroud forward to insert 2 hair curlers (wrapped in felt and separated by a baffle) this gun is nearly as quiet as the FX. The rear bolt is the best I have seen -- silky smooth is not an exaggeration. The build quality (internals and externals) is simply excellent. The 2stage adjustable trigger is not an FX of course, but some polishing made it very sweet. The only downside is the poorly varnished yellowish stock. The beech wood and classic design are fine but the poor finishing simply does not do justice to this gun. I refinished it and never looked back. In fact, one guy fielded it against the FX and other high end usual suspects in the Dutch benchrest contest and did not do half bad!
