Looking into a raccoon shorter range airgun

I got the long-range covered (FX Dreamline with an atn x-sight 4k pro - broke the bank), but these guys can be as close as 10yards when they are eating cat food in the garage. I'm looking for a smaller hunting pistol/carbine/maybe bullpup rifle - some kind of backpack gun. I'm also not trying to break the bank again, but keying in on value. Been looking at Kral Arms NP-03, Hatsan sortie, AEA has some semi's, P-rod, Airforce talon-p. some have not had great reviews. loudness isn't much of a factor. Thinking around .25 and defiantly a PCP.

This is meant for shooting raccoons and smaller from close to about 25 yards. It will probably get a rds or just irons.

I'm kinda new to all this, but absolutely love plinking and targeting with the Dreamline. 75yrds groups are living in the bullseye.

Thanks

Well , if your going after trash pandas close in you will want 25 cal. Also going to want 30 FPE minimum . Since you also said smaller critters, it will need to be adjustable power. Kral offers cheap power and several great guys on this forum are “Kral boys” they could answer any questions you have. I had an NP-03 in 25. It was decent, but a step down from the FX , taipan, AGT etc. if you want premium at decent cost, maybe a used taipan shorty 25 . Mine is variable power 20-42 FPE and quiet , dead accurate. Also Brocock has a couple small guns as well as Zbroia.

A .25 EDgun Lelya works for me within your specified range shooting 25.39 grain pellets. I think it’s compact enough to fit into a backpack. I’ve never put one in a backpack, but seen people in videos do it. It has enough power to put a raccoon down with a head shot. See for yourself https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/racoon-headshot-edgun-lelya-25/?referrer=1

For the distance you’re shooting, I’d look at the AEA offerings. They’re power houses in their class, have some very compact offerings, and they’re well priced and readily available. I think the prod/sortie/pp700 will probably be a little underpowered for game like raccoons. I also think .25 is a must.
look for something a little higher end too used in the classifieds. There’s some decent stuff coming up lately.

I second the Taipan Veteran compact in .25 if you can find one within your budget. Mine shoots the 25.4 JSB’s right at 900 FPS for 45 FPE. Whatever you get I would want at least .25 with as much FPE as you can get. I know some will say they use a .177 and it does fine with a well placed shot. The issue is your quarry could move at anytime and turn a well placed shot into a really bad one. I like the Talon P but would rather have something with a magazine for a quick follow up shot or if there is more than one raccoon within range. A Krale would certainly work and there are a few tuners on here that can get much more out of them than they have in stock form. Good luck in your search.

thanks, im loving the taipan vet compacts. just a bit pricey. getting one used may make sense if I can find one, def the top choice. efforting more on the krales

If you really want a Taipan I would hold off until one comes up for sale here at a good deal. Do not overlook the standard, it’s just 4 inches longer than the compact and still very short at 28”. It puts out 55 FPE in stock form and has more power potential due to the extra barrel length. You can install a heavier hammer spring in a couple minutes and get over 60 FPE if you want more power. I have all three sizes of the Vet and my opinion is the standard is the best overall one size wise. It has the larger stock like the long version. The compact’s stock is shorter and some might feel a little cramped shooting it. Put that Dreamline on coon watch until you can find the gun you really want.

If you already like FX products you might try to find a used Wildcat MK1 in .25. The price should be just about what you're looking for. Put a red dot on it or a decent low powered illuminated scope. Those things shoot around 40-45 fpe and if you shoot JSB Hades you could cut down on a few pass throughs that always seem to end up hitting your new lawnmower or garbage can.

Have Fun!

Popped one a couple months ago with my .25 shorty. JSB KING at 40 FPE.

He was about 30 feet up in a tree and I sent one into his rib cage near the spine.

Dropped like a stone about 30 seconds later. Must have hit his heart and/or lung.

Not saying you need a Taipan, just giving you an idea what 40FPE will do.

Good luck!
