Loud Thud

Looked out the bedroom window this morning and was shocked to see another rabbit at the bird feeder. It had it's back too me so I let one rip, have never heard a weird loud thud like that (impact) from my PP750 22 cal. It took three small hops an was done. I got one last Friday but it made it over to my next door neighbor (mid day while working in the yard my neighbor told me I see you were at it again he explain his wife seen it laying in the yard and he took care of it) I also got a tree rat in between the rabbits.

I think I finally got them all cleaned out for this winter

That's a fat rabbit. Do you eat them? This time of year they sure make a good meal. You learn a bunch about shot placement when you dress them too.

The "thud" is is a sweet thing. It's a blast of endorphins when your projectile impacts. I've shot a bunch of bushy tailed ground squirrels. They all make their own special thud, thwack, or thwop. If recorded and arranged you could make a music video with a thwackin' beat.

I think it's how full their lungs and bellies are at impact and the angle and shot placement.

I shoot toy dinosaurs for practice. They sound sweet like that when you hit them. Not quite the same but you still get a little happy when the pellet thwacks or thuds.

Bob, If I was hunting in the wild I'd eat them but being in the outside sub's no, some do not look healthy. It was eating sunflower seeds sitting kind a low and could only see maybe 1/2" of it's head figured it was a good shot for the heart or lungs. I'm glad it worked out but as you mentioned I should have gutted it to know exactly what I hit. It was a large female and the biggest I've taken in my yard for this area. I was leaving them be till I seen them eating the bark off of my low hanging cedar trees, the tree rats do the same. Still thinking of that sound of impact, usually I go for the head or close too the shoulder. Thanks for you comments.

Brother... That is a beautiful gun.

That stock looks self fabricated.
(If not, where did you find it)
The grips as well. I cannot stand the stock that comes on the umarex iteration.

Did you do all the parts yourself?

$pOOkygHOST, Yes I made it myself, I'm a retired welder so it was pretty easy. The grips came from Wes at Airgunarcheryandfun in Canada he had a few different colors. The black cheek rest is from a fir 2x4 lol and the black self adhesive foam on the wood is from Hobby Lobby. The hardest part was drilling the cheek rest for the two stainless steel rods only because of the small cheap harbor freight drill press I have. I had a spare piece of aluminum plate in which I cut the strips from with a jig saw, then formed, drilled, tapped the holes for stainless screws. It would of come out nicer and faster but I didn't have a tig welder. Thanks for the compliment

Before going into insurance with my father I was a production welder. MiG'ing ductile iron for fire sprinkler mains, standpipes and FDCs, TiG'd for Kubota exhaust parts.
I like the flat bar stock look. Nice bending.

I was thinking either tapping two holes on the bottom of the pistol grip and using bar stock to fashion an under folder. Sadly, umarex didn't seem fit to bless us with the receiver mounted wire stock.

Can one attach a foldable piece to the back for the butt stock ? also have you had that whole back part off ? It's hard to tell from the dark picture but the front of that receiver is that a tapped hole in the side ? Would you have another one in the back by the curve in the pistol grip hidden from the stock ?
Nope. The only holes are smooth and house slip pins to hold the valve, and bolt bushing in. Yes I've done this gun inside and out. Yes a folding stock is available, but it utilizes the stock plastic grip, which is the exact thing I want to get rid of. I enjoy the slim profile of the grip without the plastic cancer.

That's a bummer, do you have a picture with the stock off ?
I'll take one. But it should be the same as the pp750. Same gun as notos.

Same hammer spring adjuster.

Your exactly right, would be tempting too switch out the top half of a 750

The thud you hear is always present when you shoot a living animal.
The same when shooting in a combat situation.
Maybe I should have used a different word sorry if I offended you but, it sounded more like a low base drum hard to explain as this was a strange one. Also I try not to think of the past I'm also a combat vet.

If the lungs are full it's different than at the bottom of a breath. The kill time is quicker at the bottom of a breath. A shot on a full lung takes longer. I think that makes a difference in the impact sound too.

Tap yourself on the chest at a full lung. It resonates. At the end of an exhale not so much. The tightness of the stomach muscles and the fullness of the belly probably has an effect.

A shot with a building or rock behind it returns a good impact report. On a ridge the report is different.

If I shoot a ground squirrels in front of his hole it pops like a .22 rimfire. On a rise or a rock the quality of the report is much "lighter". It kinda thwacks. In front of a building it ka-thwops.

In my experience pellet gun impacts are really variable and sometimes unexpected. Hits with a high powered rifle dont seem to me to be as variable and unique as the sound of pellet gun hits. Maybe because the range is closer and the targets are smaller and you can hear the difference better?

An old hunter told me to shoot at the bottom of the hill and at the bottom of a breath. They have to run uphill to get away and your bullet damages more lung tissue when they are deflated. I read a couple supporting articles and I believe this is true. I also believe if your shot "pops" loudly the lungs were expanded when impact occurred. That's just a theory but I think it's a well grounded one.
