LPVO vs Prism

Picked up a Notos on sale recently and wanted a cheap(ish) optic for close range plinking/small game. I bought a holographic sight but it left a lot to be desired.

I’ve been looking into LPVO and prism scopes and was wondering what the general consensus was on which is recommended.

Any and all input welcomed. I don’t want to spend too much as the gun was only $225 and it doesn’t need to work miracles. I just want clear glass and clear picture from 10-30ish yards. Thanks 🙏

I'm a fan of the LPVO's. I prefer them on firearms though. The shorter ranges of airguns doesnt make them ideal in my experience. I tried several LPVO's on the Notos from brands such as Blackhound, Primary Arms, Vortex, and Truglo and just couldnt love it on the Notos like I do my other platforms. I currently have a smallish 4-12 on my Notos, but seriously considering getting one of these that was discussed last week...

I have this one and it is very nice. I payed a lot for my Athlon LPVO, but it wasn’t right on an air gun. Womderful on my AR.

i bought this little Disco and it’s really nice. With the adjustment it will focus well in poor light at max magnification. Turn it down to 4x and it focuses well at very short distances.

Not like my Athlons, but good clear image. I will likely buy a second one in time.

Good to hear. I've not yet grabbed one, but likely will, or will wait for one to show up used. I'm in no hurry right now, but it definitely piqued my interest, something that optics rarely do for me.

The only problem is which one gets it. For now it’s the 1720. Come chipper season it will be on one of the Prods.

I've recently bought this Primary Arms SLX 3X MicroPrism, with the ACSS illuminated Raptor/Griffin X MIL reticle. A member has it on his Evol Mini, which is about the same size as your Notos. There's several reticles to choose from, and this one has 10 mils of holdover for longer range shooting if you want.

Do prisms like that focus at close range? I never had opportunity try one without buying.
Good question @Struckat . I'll find out in a few days I suppose, but if anyone knows the answer, please let us know in the mean time. I think these type are always "in focus" as just a 3X multiplier, as I've not see anything different out of all the reviews and videos I've seen lately.

Actual, holographic sights are nice...IF you understand them, and how to use them.

Prism scopes are also a great way to go. They are a cross between a red dot and a scope. No battery needed (actually). I have a few. I like the no battery requirement. And yeah, as for size...you can't...get a scope that small and light !!

At only 10 to 30 yards, you'll want a 1x or maybe 3x prism scope. And similar, you'll NEED a scope with an adjustable parallax (wheel on the left side) capability.

Yeah, holographic sights aren’t too complicated. I certainly understand them. I just don’t like a laser shining onto glass I guess. I certainly didn’t buy an expensive piece one because I’m trying to find “budget” optics for the Notos.

I ended up ordering the Discovery HD 2-12 others suggested earlier in this thread for $189 directly from them. I can’t find anything else in the price range that checks as many boxes as that 👍

I am sure this is a great optic, but for $189 I opted for the Discovery HD 2-12 https://www.discoveryopt.com/HD-2-12X24SFIR-Compact-FFP-Optics-Scope.html as it seems to check all of the boxes.

Good glass, 2-12 magnification, parallax down to 5 yards, 8.5” long. I’d like to have SOME scope adjustment (I think). I was searching for a good prism scope, but at $320 ($100 more than I paid for the Notos) it just don’t seem worth it compared to the Discovery.

I used a Monstrum LPVO on my Hatsan Flashpup for quite some time. Worked out well for that platform. I currently use an MPVO on my Macavity Ma2 .30. Turned out to be a good set-up for it. Nailing 1" targets at 75 yds. I like the MPVO much more.

Yeah I don’t know if I’d even take a 75 yard shot with the Notos unless it was for 💩 and giggles on paper. The Discovery goes to 10x and that should be more than I’ll ever need on that platform.

That scope you bought is probably one of the best little and inexpensive scopes to come out for airgun use in a long time. You'll like it. And, definitely stretch it out to 75 yards. Practicing at those distances really helps make the short range shots seem easy.
Yeah I have an Impact m3 I stretch out with and have no trouble with aim or accuracy. I’ve been shooting for a long time. My point was if I was to reach out to 75+ yards I wouldn’t be using the Notos. With a 12 inch barrel it’s like chasing a pot of gold. That’s not at all what I intend to use it for. All guns have limits and I have no need to practice shots I’ll never take.

I agree. I keep my shots with the notos around 50 and less. The MPVO on my MA2 is a 2-10x30 with Monstrum's MX1 box reticle. Has been a great match for it. I keep my shots at 100 yds and less.

I wasn't impressed or enthused using LPVO's at shorter distances because they usually have a fixed parallax at 100Y. There was fisheye, parallax error up closer, and generally wonky IQ the higher the magnification and the closer I was. That changed when I got a March 1-10 DFP shorty because it has a 10Y side focus but it's expensive.

Also tried a few prisms. I liked the thicker reticles but I sold them because I wanted more magnification.

RD's are okay and seem to work well in spite of the fact that the dot looks more like a amoeba nowadays and zero magnification.

That D 2-12 was probably the best decision.

I agree and I’m so glad I asked because I had a few in my Amazon cart that would have been mediocre at best. I was going to settle for a monstrum or tacticon 1-6 with fixed parallax for around $150. As soon as I did some research on this D 2-12 I was pretty impressed with all of its features for $189 shipped with rings. I think it’ll be a great scope for just about any airgun as it is perfect for airgunning ranges. Definitely happy with the decision 👍

Just an FYI, the rings that come with the Discovery scopes are 'mediocre at best' so maybe look at ordering something else. Monstrum actually makes some decent Pro Series rings in the $35.00 range, available on Amazon.
