I put the pump handle more on my waist under my stomach and use all my weight to press the last bit of air by bending the knees. Much easier than trying to push down with just the weight of my upper body and straight arms. Only really need the whole body weight when you start getting over 200 bar. Up to that point just straight arms abd upper body weight work well. Sounds like you are putting too much stress on your hands and hitting the hard stop when bottoming out. I get more of a short squat workout with the handle in my waist.
