Marauder Mods

Hey all,

I have a Gen 2 Marauder in .25 that I picked up earlier this year and it has made me totally fall in love with PCP airguns. I was considering purchasing another rifle, but after doing a little thinking and a lot of reading I'm just going to hold what I've got and determine what I really need, if anything, in my next purchase.

In current form my rifle puts 3 shots through a single hole at 15 yards, and 8 shots in under a half inch at 30 yards with 25.39gr JSB Exact Kings. I don't think I could ask for much more as far as accuracy. It keeps up with me and the 7x Hawke for the time being. I also like shooting the 33.95gr JSB King Heavies, which do not group quite as well, but shoot better than any else non-JSB.

I don't have my chrono numbers in front of me, but with the 25.39grs I get 16 fairly consistent shots between ~850-860FPS from ~2,800 down to ~2,000PSI, about 41.5ft/lbs I believe, that's pretty good velocity IMO from this 'gun at this price point. Obviously more shots would be great. I would like to have a bit more power ideally, but how fast can can these pellets fly before losing stability and spiraling? What's the maximum stable speed? I have heard 900-950FPS from one source I know nothing about. My rifle shooting Polymags about 920FPS and they do not shoot as well as I've heard they should, I could see them spiraling off-POA... but I think others shoot them faster? Sorry, anyway...

I'd like to mod my rifle a little bit and wanted y'all's thoughts on some things:

-I ordered a moderator from Neil Clague already. Noise is a major concern for me.

-I want to install a depinger. I understand my Marauder has one from the factory. It doesn't work. Which designer should I buy? The Hill Airgun one is priced right and aluminum, but is their a potential advantage of a polymer one (like soaking up more vibration as opposed to passing it on?). A friend used some tubing that they installed themselves and I wasn't very impressed with the results.

-I badly need a HDD, and I would like to go ahead and buy. Which HDD should I get?  I am considering both the WAR SSG ($80) and the FreeFlight Hammer Kit from AOA ($25). I understand there may be some politics involved in ownership rights or something; but speaking objectively, of performance, what does the SSG do better than the FFH, or do that the FFH doesn't do at all?

-I am probably going to install a regulator soon, but down the road. I was going Huma unless y'all have other thoughts. At that point I'd probably need a lightweight hammer, light valve spring, WAR or Hill valve. The video of the Hill gun getting a consistent ~1,050FPS is impressive, but can that shoot as accurately as I am at 860FPS?

Thanks for your thoughts!

Man, I remember this phase of my pcp addiction...bro, you're in for a lot of fun modding your stock Marauder. I used the Hill depinger in my .25 ( easy to install and remove factory depinger...definitely an improvement ), did some minor hammer spring adjustments, carbon fiber wrapped shroud, air tube, and a Neil Clague LDC that I bought from Dairyboy (also made air stripper port holes bigger for even more noise reduction) and threw on a simple duplex reticle scope (i only plink with the Marauder from a window at a set distance).
Topics on the Marauder have been EXHAUSTED.
Go to www.marauderairrifle.com for just about anything you can think of regarding this platform. Those guys are Marauder enthusiasts.
I'm gonna rain on your parade just a little...when you get into higher end air rifles you're gonna look upon your super modded Marauder, when you remember it, and blow dust off it
In the meantime, have fun.

The speed of sound is your theoretical limit for accuracy. Pellets slow down quickly and a pellet that goes faster than the speed of sound will destabilize when it drops back below it.

In practice you'll have to test each pellet and experiment to find the most accurate place to set your gun. Each gun is different and there is no consistency even between pellets from the same tin.

More speed will give you a flatter trajectory but not necessarily more accuracy at the distances you are talking about. I would go for shot to shot consistency more than max speed.

The Huma regulator in both my .177 & .22 Marauders took care of the shot ping better than the Hill depinger. With that said, the Hill depinger does do a very good job on its own & Tim is good to work with IMHO. I have FFH in both with no issues, but others have really good points about the design advantages of the WAR SSG & Travis is also a great guy.

I also have Neil's hardware on both rifles and his stuff just plain works well, but lengthens the rifle a bit. I suggest trying the regulator and/or/or together FFH/SSG first and see if the noise meets your needs. If not, add a NC for sure.

Disregard -
You've really done your homework - well done. Wish I'd taken a shorter hardware path, but the journey has been really fun. Best of luck in your Marauder adventure!!

First off welcome to the addiction of the Mrod platform when you get sucked in its hard to come out lol first I would say SSG is a must. Second hills depingers work great so does his valves Ive had 3 different Mrods with hill valve a .22, regulated .25 and a .30. a Huma reg would be the way to go if you wanted to regulate it. Recently a few of us ha d gotten 40 shots at 40fpe regulated. But with a regulator a depinger isn't necessary. As far as pellets flying at certain speeds I find Polymags work best around 850s and actually most my guns are tuned to 865 with JSBs but I prefer shot count and efficiency over raw power

"bill_dd97"Look up how to tune your rifle before you start throwing mods at it. My .25 Gen 2 with stock parts is tuned to 38 fpe for 32 shots from 3000psi to 2000psi. The Mrod has tons of potential for just about any kind of shooting.
That is awesome to get 32 shots but for a .25 Maruader, I would be wanting to get at least 42-45 FPE for hunting which would of course be at the expense of shot count. The power would depend on your purpose. If you're plinking then .38 would be great.
I am in love with my .22 Marauder which I have done a lot of modifications to. They have a simply format and a great rifle to learn on. My Marauder is a lazer out to 50 yards. I placed 20th competing against pros at this years Benchrest Extreme (Not sure why there was not a sportmans class or I would have be close to the top)

PS. There are tons of U-tube "how to's" on the Marauder
