Maverick .177 Porker Down

...your youtube vid showed the Dutch language when I watched it...and I am currently in France...
Is the 12 fpe limit an EU law or is it just applicable to individual EU countries. I ask because I am thinking about getting permanent residency in Spain and have not looked into their laws of fpe for PCPs.

the 12 fpe limit is a UK limit, so definitely (fortunately) not an EU one...LOL..., I think the Spanish limit is 24,4 joules. https://www.buksforum.nl/xbuks/threads/regels-binnen-verschillende-europese-landen.551/
the list is easy to understand, I think...lol.

Would never recommend this to anyone who asks...
But, that's because if you need to ask, you probably shouldnt be doing it. The 'lowly' .177 can definitely take larger game.

You just need the patience, skill, and knowledge of where to precisely put the pill.

I think where some folks take exception (and I know I do) is when some Elmer Fudd pops on asking about taking a hog with a .177 (or any animal for that matter) because they seen it on a video and they have no idea what they are getting in to. The gun can do it...the gun may be accurate enough, and you might even be accurate enough with it off a bench, but can you do it in a hunting situation when nerves and the jitters are running high and do you have the patience to wait for precisely the right time to let that shot fly? I tend to think that if you are popping on a forum to get that advice from folks you dont know, then you probably dont.

You obviously know what you're doing and have shown what is possible! Very impressive, sir!

I remember seeing this thread a year ago and it still amazes me! Do you happen to know of your barrel is a polygonal or standard grove?
The barrel is a standards 12 groove. I think the fastest twist AP offers the polygon is 420mm(16.5"). That 370mm(14.6") AP barrel combo is still my favorite slug gun though :D

Nice accomplishment but not one I will try. Not trying to be critical, I just don't have anything that will put out that level of fpe regardless of caliber.

At the same fpe, smaller calibers will penetrate deeper. There is a youtube by Baker airguns where they tested two calibers at the same power level in ballistic gel. I think it was 25 and 30 but it might have been 22 and 25.

I test penetration in mdf sometimes as a simulation for making it through an animal skull. In those tests, hollow point versus domed doesn't seem to make a difference. I think that is because all the projectiles are significantly distorted by the mdf. If the mdf is a decent way to test skull penetration that would mean using a hollow point slug for a brain shot will not matter, it will penetrate like a solid pointed projectile. In wet paper (my muscle simulation) the hollow points definitely penetrate less but not in mdf. Distortion of domed pellets in wet paper is minimal.

Yeah the AP is a 430mm, thanks for that! They're pretty cheaply priced, haven't checked shipping price though. You have some done some wicked builds.

Yeah, I've always used a piece of 3/4" MDF as my test media for a hog skull. I figure if my gun will punch throught that, it'll easily poke a hole in a hog's noggin. I've seen people kill them with guns that won't go through that, but I prefer to err on the side of more penetration. I won't use a gun that won't do it myself. Fwiw, I've always used HP slugs and had no issues with penetration. Keep in mind, I'm talking about real slugs and not FX Hybrids. The FX Hybrid is probably the worst possible projectile one could use for a head shot on a hog. I'd use a pellet, before I'd use those. Still, I tend to use the heaviest slugs my gun will shoot for the job. I imagine the HP would be more of an issue on lighter slugs in lower powered guns though.

Thanks man. The biggest issue with Alfa Precision barrels has never been price, rather it has been being able to get one here in the states. Given they are Russian made, it is quite an ordeal acquiring/paying for one. That has just gotten better though, they emailed me a month or two back and let me know they have a warehouse in Spain now, which should make it easier for us to get them now. I had to jump through some hoops to get them back when I did. Fortunately, I was able to get the two blanks thrown in with an Edgun barrel shipment that was bound here for a retailer, who allowed me to pay them for the blanks ;) With the Spain warehouse, I assume that kind of trickery would no longer be needed.

That's good to know! Hopefully they can provide without too much hastle. You definitely lucked out!

No crap given, I'm just impressed that you took a Hog with a .177 pellet, albeit 23 grains moving right along.
Good job!
Haha, I get ya. I think that's my 4th one with the .177, with them all being in the 150-200+lb range. I've taken quite a few using the same gun with a .30 barrel on it too. I actually like using the .177 the most. It is just a little death laser :D I've got a couple with .22 too, but with different guns.
