Tuning Maverick/Wildcat Hammer interior milling - a flaw?

I've noticed that my Maverick hammer has a lot of milling marks in the interior cavity. These look like shallow screw threads. This prevents the hammer weight from sliding smoothly inside the hammer—and I think causes the hammer weight to get hung up and not travel fully forward—causing inconsistency when opening the valve.

Is this normal and common with FX hammers?

I am using the Hammer V7, used in the Maverick and Wildcat Mk3. Part # 19039

Thanks

Ha! Thank you.

I just ordered this hammer on Monday. On my other hammer, the heavy hammer weight got lodged in the hammer and was stuck fast—impossible to remove without damaging the hammer. I had to get a new hammer and weight.

For a while now I've been noticing velocity inconsistency on the chronograph. My gun have a consistent streak and then go wildly off for a a shot or two. My theory is that the hammer weight was getting caught up on these threads—and it the problem was worse with lighter hammer weights because they would catch more easily. It was not the regulator.

The funny thing is that the gun was shooting okay with the heavy weight stuck inside the hammer. At least it was more consistent.

Thanks again.

LOU - I need to take my gun apart to get a picture, BUt if you look inside your hammer you’ll notice the milling marks, and you will also notice that your hammer weight doesn’t slide smoothly inside the hammer. The hammer weight can get caught on the milling marks, and it also can tilt a little inside the hammer, causing it to get caught sometimes.

Ok to check this with out taking the gun apart, as you move the gun from barrel pointing downward to barrel pointing upward with the gun decocked should you be able to hear the hammer move to one end or the other? Should there be a light film of silicone oil in this area as well as using emory cloth to polish the parts if the hammer is found to be sticking?

Kinda. Using the ear alone it would be hard to tell if the hammer weight is sliding within the hammer, or if the hammer weight is stuck inside the hammer and you are only hearing the hammer slide a bit. My ear is not trained enough to tell anyway.

Taking the gun apart is not too difficult. These two videos below are pretty good. Ernest Rowe also has a couple of videos on Wildcat disassembly which is the same as the Maverick.

Also, you don’t need to pull the hammer itself out to diagnose—you can simply remove the adjustment dial and the hammer weight + spring will just slide out. If they slide out easily you don’t have a problem.

I haven’t used any oil but I have used 3M polishing paper to polish the spring and hammer weight, making it a little bit smoother.
