Greetings Friends,
With the 2023 TEXtreme season gathering momentum, I reckon it’s time for some updates.
First things first- Weather permitting, Saturday, May 6 will be our (weather-postponed) inaugural AAFTA-style field target match; not to be confused with Extreme Field Target. Rather than try to orient anyone unfamiliar with AAFTA Field Target, find everything you need to know in the AAFTA handbook with this link-
https://www.aafta.org/uploads/1/2/7/6/127666620/2023_aafta_official_field_target_rules.pdf
No, there is no Cliff Notes version, and I won’t orient you by keyboard. However it behooves anyone shooting an AAFTA style match to read, know, and understand the rules; at least those pertinent to your chosen division and class.
Our May 6 AAFTA-style match will award framed certificates and hat-pins to Match Winners of any class with at least five entrants. In the likely event there are not five entrants in any Springer class, if there are at least five Springer DIVISION shooters there will be Springer Division Match Winner certificate and hat-pin awards.
Shooters are welcome to shoot a pistol or Fun Rifle in the match, however the same requisite of at least five entrants applies regarding awards.
Which brings us to the Updates part of this email/post. Although I “work” at a decidedly “unhurried” pace in retirement/old-age, there have been some changes/improvements/evolution this season at Ranchito Robinson.
MANY THANKS TO MANY FRIENDS, we now have twenty targets (each), on ten lanes for all our field target matches. Hence, notwithstanding unforeseeable circumstances, all FT matches at Ranchito Robinson will be now sixty shots. WOOHOO!
Parcel to that, the latest new lane (new Lane 5) was excavated with the omnipresent goal of doing justice to our new SASQUATCH extreme target donated by our friends Mike Bricker, Derrick Wall, Bill Miller, and Tony and Barb Pellegrino. Sas is awesome, and I believe I achieved my goal of doing justice to “her” with an awesome new lane. The first 50 yards is carved through thick cedar (wind-cover), up the steepest hill on RR. However the last 25 yards opens into a clearing; where the terrain not only then falls off, but notorious winds are funneled through the clearing. Hint- funneled winds increase in velocity! Due to the rise and fall of the terrain, to see Sas from the shooting line she had to be placed atop a five-foot elevated base; kind of a table-dance style. Not sure how I came up with that term, but it probably has something to do with my buddy Jim Byrd who not only donated the materials for the elevated base and other targets, but welding and work involved in constructing the base. Many thanks Jim!
Sas hasn’t yet been tested to see if she can be coerced to lay down… to 55 yard paddle hits from 12 foot-pound guns, YOU SICK-O! However, suffice to say my hopes are high.
It now occurs to me that I might have neglected to publicly thank Sam Ramirez for fabricating several heavy-duty, mobile target bases for other of our extreme field targets, that allow much easier transitions from pistol to rifle courses and vice-versa. With each course transition I’m improving speed and efficiency, thereby reducing the time and aggravation involved. Many thanks to you, Sam!
In other news, not only is Ranchito Robinson in full bloom on a verdant green background, but some old codger has been landscaping the flower-beds with interesting new ornamentals. A horticulturist I’m NOT; however the transplant survival rates are pretty good this Spring.
As a reminder, the June 2-4 TEXtreme Field Target weekend is our BIG Extreme Field Target Grand Prix event. That being the case, not only does it feature the richest awards including Airguns Of Arizona gift certificates AND CASH prizes for all Rifle and Pistol podium placers, but every rifle competitor earns 1/2 to 1 point in the 2023 national Grand Prix competition, priority notice of when the AoA Extreme Bench-rest weekend registration opens, and Rifle podium finishers at our TFT weekend also earn more Grand Prix points. All details can be found in this link-

Our June 2-4 TEXtreme Grand Prix weekend will feature a sixty-shot Extreme Pistol FT match on Friday, and sixty-shot Extreme Rifle Field Target matches Saturday and Sunday to decide aggregate Rifle results. Timers will be used in the rifle matches so competitors attending EBR can practice shooting “under the gun” (timers), as done at EBR. Yes; all competitors in our Grand Prix Rifle matches will be required to use timers, whether you are attending EBR or not. More details about our Grand Prix weekend will be communicated in other emails/posts as that weekend approaches.
There seems to be a promising level of interest in our AAFTA-style FT matches. Not only from those familiar with TEXtreme and AAFTA-style matches I hosted in years past (pre-TEXtreme), but from several folks that have yet to experience Ranchito Robinson. I’m really looking forward to welcoming them, and exposing them and TEXtreme “regulars” alike to the changes/improvements/evolution of the Ranchito Robinson venue, 2023.
In closing, I want to thank not only our GENEROUS TEXtreme Field Target sponsor AIRGUNS OF ARIZONA for all they’ve done to launch and support TEXtreme Airgun Sports, but the many individual friends that have been so generous with donations and help on many levels. However there’s no question if this senile old fart tries to name them all I’ll miss some; so I’ll not open myself to such embarrassment. You (all) know who you are, and hopefully I’ve thanked you before. Please consider this another heartfelt THANK YOU. I love you folks!
Maggyy and I really look forward to sharing our place and FUN with you all again soon. Maggyy says “WOOF” Y’all!
Best Regards,
R & M
