With several shooters over the last week soliciting predictions about expected turn-out for the inaugural AAFTA-Style match at the TEXtreme Airgun Sports World Headquarters Shooting Complex, the depths of my powers of ESPN were once again put to test. And when the number of shooters matched my prediction exactly, those powers put on full display. Ten shooters contested the PCP division. Four more courageous souls braved the horrors of Springer Division field target competition.
Readers attempting the advanced calculus required to confirm the accuracy of my turn-out prediction will arrive at the inarguable conclusion that 10 + 4 equals EXACTLY my prediction of “between one and two dozen” shooters. Most of my prophecies prove uncannily accurate. About the only way my predictions sometimes stray from their usual accuracy is in the realm of weather predictions. Unfortunately that is a serious handicap for a shooting match director.
What that means relating to this match report is the Troyer factor of 34.3T for yesterdays course is National Championships level of challenge. More importantly, I would predict if the shooters were asked if wind conditions we experienced yesterday qualify for the 1.25X wind multiplier, exactly 100% would reply “YES!” So applying the 1.25X wind multiplier to yesterdays 34.3T course difficulty results in an adjusted Troyer Factor of 42.9. OOPS; sorry fellas! But FYI and FWIW, I am working on my weather-prophesiesing skills. It’s slow going.
Giving the Springer warriors the priority and recognition they so deserve, one stood head and shoulders above the rest… LITERALLY. Scott Cotton, aka- Sasquatch, posted an excellent-for-conditions 30/60 score to capture the framed Spring Piston Match Winner certificate, a Match Winner hat-pin, and a Pellet Gage (courtesy of Jerry Cupples). SasScott used a Paul Bishop custom-stocked Weihrauch HW-97 topped with a Falcon T50 scope, shooting 8.4 Air Arms pellets 790 FPS. Great shooting Scott!
Bill Burkett finished second in the Springer division with his Sightron scoped HW-97. However his pellet and velocity are unknowns, and his score-card has since been marked CLASSIFIED.
The PCP Division Match Winner was Ron Robinson. I shot a gorgeous Daystate Wolverine producing 900 FPS with 10.3 grain FX pellets, topped with a Weaver V-16 scope. My Match Winner awards are whatever I decide they will be. Still trying to decide between another Bugatti Chiron (in a different color than my other two), a Lear Jet (newer than my old 2022 model), or both? I posted a 51/60. Yay Me.
Jim Martin was second in PCP Division with an excellent 47/60 score; despite the side-wheel falling off his Arken scope mid-match! Jim’s score-card is a wealth of valuable information. For instance, his Air Force HM1000 shoots 10.3 grain pellets fast, and Jim traveled all the way from Home to contest the match. Excellent shooting Jim!
At this point I feel compelled to offer a warning and another prediction. I suggest no-one ask any questions of Jim about his scorecard, lest One suffer an unfortunate accident or meet an untimely demise. “Just sayin’.”
A newbie to TEXtreme Airgun Sports, and if I’m not mistaken, relatively new to field target, David Turner finished third in PCP Division. David used a Daystate Red Wolf topped with a SIghtron S3 scope to post an excellent 43/60 score. David shot 13.43 grain .177 pellets at undisclosed velocity. Good shooting, David.
Time for another prediction. Chronograph testing is a-comin’ to TEXtreme competitions. I further predict on or about exactly June 2-4.
Many thanks to Jerry Cupples for donating Pellet Gages, notebooks, and pens for prizes at Saturdays AAFTA-style match. And making the trip from North Carolina. Sorry you had to squad with El Pablo Bracagliano to share and shoot that ugly Wolverine I sold him, then endure a Mexican food feast followed by all the Jose’ Cuervo you could drink. I hope you managed to eke out some semblance of fun this weekend.
Many thanks also to Billy Davison for procuring donations from Athlon Optics of an Athlon Heras 4-20X50 rifle scope and two Athlon spotting scopes for upcoming TEXtreme Field Target competitions. What great prizes those will be! Oh, thanks also for the nice insulated tumbler, Billy. It has already proven a fine vessel for the expeditious ‘delivery’ of Margaritas. MANY THANKS, Billy!
We had enough donated goodies Saturday that every shooter in attendance won a door prize after our shooters meeting. That’s a nice first.
I’ll take this opportunity to issue reminders about our next TEXtreme match the first weekend of June (the 2-4). That being our big Extreme Field Target Grand Prix weekend, it not only awards the richest prize list in Texas field target history, and national Grand Prix points to every rifle match entrant, but also additional GP points to the top three podium placers in our rifle event.
How rich? So far the prize list in cash, Airguns Of Arizona gift certificates, and Athlon Optics merchandise totals over $4000 in value. Prizes will be awarded to podium placers in both the Rifle and Pistol Extreme Field Target competitions.
So mark your calendars on the first weekend in June for the Texas leg of Airguns Of Arizona’s Extreme Field Target National Grand Prix series.
It’s gonna be awesome, Y’all!
