Maybe I was too optimistic for my Taipan .177 Standard accuracy?

Sell it off and get the FX Crown and shoot hole in hole, with the little straw barrel :D

Hi kyPop, I have recently received a .177 Taipan veteran and it loves the jsb 10.34 from 940 down to 800fps thas as low as I've gotten so far. 890fps would be a good place to start that seemed to be the sweet spot for me.
I'm beginning to think that my pellets are off. Most of my other pellets (.22 and .25) were purchased as long ago as 4 years. These .177's are brand new and they may be suffering from a little quality control issue.

How old are your pellets? Mine .177's are new and my others (.22 and .25) are as old as 4 years. I'm suspecting quality control on the new ones.

I would try some 10.3 grain in the FX, Air Arms or JSB. They should group well at 880-900. I know JSB makes all these pellets, but I specifically asked AA if they were the same via email. I received a reply stating that JSB made the pellets but AA had their own mold that was very slightly different from the JSB one and was used to manufacture their pellets only. I don’t know about FX but they might own their own molds as well. I will also offer to send you some of each if you want to give that a try and I know all of these shoot well in my Taipan. I did have one tin of JSB’s that were absolutely horrible a few months back. It would print a much larger than normal group and then send a flyer about 3” right or left. I ended up using all of those for tin can plinking, so a bad batch of pellets are possible.
Thanks. I think you may have hit the nail on the head. Sounds a lot like my issue. I sent Tony the pics I posted here yesterday with the targets and stats and he said it looks like a pellet issue, too. Especially since I eliminated the scope from the equation. He said he was going to try to find some different pellets for me to try. The Air Arms sounds like a good start.

Purchased jsb 10.34 within the last 6 months I also have the fx 10.34 they hit the same hole as the jsb pellets.
I have most of the popular brands in .177 the jsb/fx 10.34 are same hole if I do my part H&N pellets (I have shapes and sizes) just aren't getting along with the vet . The only other pellets that are grouping well are the jsb original monster they like the speed down around 840fps , and the Hades are showing promise at slower speeds.

When I shoot 8.4’s out of any gun I keep them below 850fps. Your Taipans platform is not designed around a .177, same with my Lelya. Port coming out of the valve is massive for a 177. A lot of these guns in 177 are just dumbed down powerhouses that they were intended to be. They were built to be .22 and up. Trust me, Taipan did not design the Veteran as a 177 first. So that’s why you should start at 10+ grains. It’s a magnum 177 so start with magnum pellets or reduce the reg. Yes, if you look hard enough you will find that one guy who claims he’s shooting light air pistol pellets a million fps into a tiny little group at a great distance, but it’s not normal. Lastly wind, no a slight breeze is your enemy with a 177. With 8.4’s, if there is a bee or a fly buzzing around near your target at 40 yards you’re in trouble. Put your target at 25 or 30, get some real pellets, set your gun at a realistic pellet speed and try again. Baby steps. Contrary to any BS you read or watch, when you get to 50 yards, that’s where you’re stretching most 177’s out. I’ve printed some really nice groups with my Lelya at 50 under ideal conditions. A slight breeze, scatter gun, grab bigger gun.

well i was testing few pellets today and all sudden gun sounded funny low shots here and there. put the chrony on it was jumping around pretty good 930 to 790 few shots think reg took a dump on new gun waiting to here from talon tunes about fixing it or replace me a reg to see if thats the case only got few days then im done for a while seems needed little more hammer spring or it coughed up something fine now it seems

Just ordered a tin each of Air Arms 8.4 and 10.3 and a tin each of FX 8.4 and 10.3. Hopefully one of those will get me on the right track. At the end of all this testing I'll have a lot of .177 pellets for sale!
I hope you find a pellet your barrel likes I think you'll be good with the 10.34 Fx .
This afternoon ups dropped off a new shipment of pellets jsb 10.34 and fx 10.34 they each have different poi but both are hole in hole at 30y which seems kind of weird to me because the head diameter measures the same, guess I'll have to weigh a few to see if that's the difference

I keep "reject" pellets from one gun to test in a future gun. I bought H&N FTTs for my 25 Avenger and it hated them. But my P35 in 25 loves them. Glad I had them on hand to test. H&N Barracuda Match were too heavy for my Prod to shoot at reasonable velocity but my P35-22 loves those. There are lots of other totally defensible strategies for "extra" pellets but having a small assortment on hand works for me.

I took mine out today, to see if it still was accurate, and it was. This it at 25m with jsb exact heavy, at around 840 fps. Not hole in hole, but close if I cherry pick a couple of the groups. All 5 shots groups, shot in succesion. But It is a challenging gun to shoot on the bench, as it is quiet sensitive to hold. I needed several attempts before theese groups, as I have not shot it in months.

By the way, When my gun was new, I was able to shoot roughly twice the size a group. Or roughly the worst on this target. I have since installed a huma reg in mine. There was nothing wrong with the original reg, but it was set to high for my need. Around 120-130 bar I think. Since I also own a huma regtetester, I went that route, as for me it would be easier to adjust, than the stock reg. One thing I also found important is to get the trigger adjusted, as mine was setup with allot of creep, probably because of safety reasons, from the factory.

Hopefully good news! I just got my FX and Air Arms pellets in and I was able to shoot a couple of magazines of the 10.3's. The FX were so-so at whatever speed my rifle was set, but the Air Arms appeared to be grouping better at 40 yards than anything else I have tried so far in the JSB's. As soon as I can, I'll set up my chrony and give all of the pellets a try, wind allowing. I have some hope at this point!

Any Taipan 177 users feel free to chime in on what speeds work for you in 8.4 and 10.3. Thanks!

Also, I put the scope I was using back on my Taipan .25 and sighted it in at 40 yards. It's dime size groups all day long. Sweet, but it feels like a cannon after shooting the .177!
