Tuning Mk3 impact. 177 max power

If you're willing to machine or get an after market barrel machined, you can trounce all over that factory power rating :D The extra barrel length can do wonders. I currently have a 635-640mm barrel in my Maverick, and it's preferred tune at the moment is 22 grain slugs at around 960 fps(45 fpe), but I have pushed it as high as 53 fpe with 24 grain slugs around 1000 fps. It will sling the 15 grain NSAs over well 1000 fps without even blinking. I'm hoping that FX will come out with a 700mm superior heavy in .177 one day. Machining a barrel isn't something a lot of people want to get involved with.

. 177mm is an often overlooked calibre.

I don't need or want anything bigger because my hunting needs don't require it, pigeons, crows and rabbits all drop down nicely with. 177mm.

I run about 23fpe with 15.8gr slugs and provided your shot placement is good long range shooting out to 80m is absolutely fine.

At 35 fpe with 1020fps gives a nice flat trajectory, as I use a pard 008p lrf I use hold over past my zero if necessary.

Unless your shooting larger quarry I can't see the need for a larger calibre.

I have an MKII and it's ridiculously overpowered for this caliber.

Either tune it for slugs and get a lower shot count at higher reg presures, or get an awesome shot count with a pellet tune at 850-900 fps. (250+ shots)

You can get a very flat trajectory with the JSB Exact Monster Redesigned 13.4, get about 150 shots at 900 fps. Hits as well as a slug and slows down because of the diabolo shape so it's not dangerous at a longer distance. This is good for the range you're looking at.

Using Gamo Buffalo pellets (16gr) or Spoton Sniper 177 slugs, can get 900 fps easily, but at a reduced shot count and a higher reg pressure. Ultimately, it depends on how you want to tune the rifle.

For a tune at 800 fps for a slug (23 ft/lb at muzzle), you can get about 17.5 ft/lb at 75yds and 16 ft/lb at 100yds, which is enough to dispatch smaller pests.

For a tune at 950 fps with the slug kit, you get 32 ft/lb at the muzzle and 22 at 100 yds. A bit too much.

Ridiculously over powered? Never heard of it :D

Inch not mm, I had a hard day that day.

35fpe isn't too much for a. 177 (that would be inch

) as it gives a lovely flat trajectory
