Moderator adapter for R9?

Was shooting the R9 this morning when I realized something was missing...

Wait... It's right here:eek:

Yup! the sight appears to have recoiled right off the gun!

Was thinking about putting it back on but also would like to put a moderator on the gun. Don't want to cut threads onto it but thought about one of those barrel diameter x 1/2"x20 threaded adapters. The OD of the R9 barrel is 15.7mm and I can get one of those adapters for a 16mm barrel diameter.

Question is would the 0.3mm oversize be an issue? If too loose I could put some masking tape on to reduce the annular gap and help keep it centered. Potentially also drill two very shallow pits for the set screws so the moderator wont recoil off as well.

Sound crazy or think it might work? Regards, Badger

Thanks for the idea but no joy on that. The diameter top to bottom at the front sight dovetail is 15.65mm. The barrel side to side diameter is 15.72mm.
so you might have to add strips to the sight area then 4 or 5 layers on top
cut individual layers and stagger seams so you get even layers maybe im over thinking?

OK good idea. I'll try three strips (0.072mm) on top followed by four 360 degree smooth wraps from a single strip of foil. Clamp the adapter set screws down on the top. On top because if I put the original sight back on it will cover the round scoring marks caused by the set screws. If it goes on easy with four, then I'll go to five.

You could PM fellow member SpiralGroove, who makes moderators for them out of Delrin that just tap on and no need to file anything. I think he just needs to know actual barrel OD to make one.
You might also look at the Apex muzzle weights at ARH and see if they're something you might consider. I have one on my Beeman R7 that Looks pretty good on there (least I think so...lol) and mounting it was simply following his how to instructions.

You have to measure the high points!
Each dovetail groove individually!
More than likely you'll have to file a bit off the sight groves to get that adapter on...
No shims required!

This may help some with your idea. HW95L moderator.

Moderator weighs 4.32 oz, 122.6 g, 1892 gr. Moderator is 6” long and female threads start 2.1” in from beveled end of Moderator. The thread is 3/4" long & 1/2" diameter with 20 threads per inch.

Replacement barrel? Interesting idea. I have a 16mm to 1/2"x20 adapter on order from DonnyFL. Will try the adapter first, short money.

Thanks, you sent me these photos during an earlier thread where my scope mount recoil walked off the gun. I've been keeping the stock bolts tight but never checked the front sight.
Ya, that flat heat slotted screw just could not get enugh on it to hold the globe on.
The rear shifting around side to side i just happen to notice. Its a pretty cheap deal for a gun of its reputation and cost ( cheap china )..lol. Oh well it is what it is . Just keep patching it up and keep shooting..🎯. I dont scope it so its a critical issue. Lol

Gad Zooks!! You're right. Just measured 16.03mm from the high edge of the dovetail to the opposite side of the barrel. Might be a perfect fit, the adapter is aluminum so should be a reasonable push fit. A bit reluctant to take a file to it still..

Yeah HW uses a pinch press to dove tail the barrel. It's not machined in! That's why the raised edges are there!

Update: 16mmx1/2" adapter arrived from DonnyFL today. Perfect mild push fit, went on with about 10-15 lb force. Can just pull it off if I need to. Put the Donny Koi on and fired a few. No clipping or noticeable POI change (at 10m anyhoo...). Can't really tell about how much quieter. To my ear no difference but the sproingy thing is going clash bang rattle right in front of me. Will try some dB meter measurements.
