Moderator Help

I have a .30 caliber impact that I love shooting at the 100 yard distance. I have never used a moderator as I live in a rural area and sound is not a problem. I am interested in trying a moderator not so much for noise reduction but to strip away some of the “dirty” air from exiting the barrel along with the pellet. I am hoping this might tighten my groups a bit. If my primary purpose is as an air stripper will it necessarily matter which brand, length, or weight moderator I chose? Any advise or thoughts will be appreciated.

Those things will not matter much but the design of the moderator might. You will probably want one of the types that use multiple air stripping baffles as opposed to a foam or fabric "muffler" style. 

If you really aren't concerned with the noise then I would suggest an actual air stripper. They are designed to do exactly what you are after and many are tuneable by adjusting the distance of the stripper from the muzzle.

While I only shoot .177, I'll second the opinion to simply try an actual air stripper. Much cheaper and will do exactly what you want, although whether or not it will tighten up groups will probably depend on the particular air stripper, your tune, etc, etc.

In any case, no need to pay UP for a moderator unless you are concerned with noise level.

Maybe change the sound, but it sure won't make it quieter.

Likely YES. Anyone having shot next to a USFT with the "T-break" will tell you THEY needed hearing protection. Different stripper's are louder than others. Also ideally every airgun stripper would be custom tuned to that rifle do to power/pellet length individual harmonics but that if you can actually shoot well enough to consistently see a difference. Muzzle flip compensate model do tend to help a lot on rigs with little to no discernable movement when fired.



OP: A moderator that actually strips air from behind pellet do stay away for the most popular brand these days. They are several usa maker's if you if you look around, know what you want and can explain exactly that. 

Pretty sure you cant buy any of this these days(?) but some nice work on shroud strippers which improve accuracy whilst using a shroud/mod.

Will the air stripper have any affect on sound?

If the air stripper is used inside the shroud, there will probably be no or very little noticeable difference in sound to the shooter and probably little if any down range although the tone of the shot may change. 

If the air stripper is the last thing the pellet passes through (not inside a shroud), then the shooter WILL notice that it is louder because the air that is stripped away will no longer be leaving straight out of the barrel with the pellet/slug. It will be directed more toward the sides and back, toward the shooter. Down range sound will either be close to the same or only marginally diminished although tonality may be affected. Of course, all of this is assuming the shots are subsonic in velocity.

For hunting I find the quiter your gun is you'll get more second shots in case you miss. 30 cal seems to scare small game more. I like picking off quails here and there.
