Moderator or Shroud, which is it now.

It seems that everyone is using the term Shroud for what I always knew as a Moderator as per this diagram.
And now a Moderator is an attachment to the end of a Shroud?
Just wanting to make sure I've got this right, so as not to confuse anyone with old school terms.

it is a "body" of or for the so called moderator, they are just translations of words, no need for confusion. We generally refer to a moderator as the screwed on end piece, but the shrouded assembly does moderate the sound level, so ,, it is what it is.
a picture is worth a thousand words
gees,, the English call a set screw a grub screw. I never heard of a grub screw until at the age of 60 I took up the pellet habit

Thanks for the input. I was going to get rid of a couple "moderators" or "LDC's" or "silencers" I don't need.
Wanted to list them as what everyone would recognize. That's all. Clearly not important.
AirArcher66 - I think your interpretation sums it up. - A shroud is a moderator, & a LDC/silencer is also a moderator...
I'll just call them moderators.
Thanks, everyone.

A shroud is also just a shroud, such as in FX shrouds.

Long -

In simple terms.

1. Shroud - The large, thin walled tube that covers the barrel. On its own, rarely does much, but make the barrel look larger in diameter.

2. Moderator, Suppressor, Silencer, (and my favorite)...Muffler - The canister (of differing dimensions) that help quiet the report from the end of the barrel after the trigger is pulled. Can be a singular walled off tube, with a hole in the center for the pellet travel, that sits inside of the outer canister. Or, it can be made of seperate baffles, also inside of the outer canister.
These normally are attached to the end of the barrel OR the shroud (or an adapter), and are attached by 1/2" x 20 (unf), or M20 x 1.

3. Shroud-moderator - On SOME guns, the shroud has "baffles" inside of it. Daystate Renegade and Pulsar to name two. There are many more. It can also be a singular piece of material with, like above, can be walled off with a hole for the pellet to travel through. The Edgun Lelya, Lelya 2, Matador, and others, or. separate baffles, like some of the the Daystate shrouds.

I think we need a committee to consider this question of enormous import to our community. I suggest we find the three or four most contentious people in the community and appoint them to define the following terms so that we have standardized definitions of these words. We will, of course, need industry funding agreement, and a consortium of vendors who also agree to abide by the ruling of the committiee.

Should be about as interesting as this thread.

JM2, YMMV

Shrouds DO moderate the volume!
