Moderator with built in Chrono

In regards to bluetooth/phone connectivity. The micro controller I'm using, esp32-s2, doesn't have any real Bluetooth capabilities. That said the esp32-s3 I think has full Bluetooth capabilities and could potentially be substituted. I'd need to look into that a bit more. The only real cost would be the developing of the android and iOS app. I've not done any phone app development in years so I'm not sure how involved that process would be. For the short term I think I'll put that on the back burner to be revisited.

MadCowCrazy2 - The modular design idea is really interesting. potentially you could just swap the end module/baffle so you could use the same "SilentChrono" (that's what I'm calling it for the time being) on guns with different calibers. Not sure if someone has a patent on modular silencers. I suspect they might and I wouldn't want to infringe.

On the topic of patents, I totally see the value of patents and why they are essential. I'm not opposed to patents. But sometimes they seem to stifle progress and innovation when intuitive ideas are patented. Integrating a chrono into a supressor feels like it fits into the "intuitive" idea category. So a patent isn't something I'm wanting to purse. Again I don't have anything against patents or others that use them. Just in this particular situation it's not something I want.

Got some work done on the aluminum prototype

Maybe I missed it, but that looks very fat and VERY heavy. Unless you have very small hands! ( smile)

A heavy can on the end of many airguns will make definite changes in accuracy. Not always bad, but IMHO, usually bad.

Also, the costs looks like it will be MUCH more than it is worth for most airgun users. Yeah, that is just a guess, but I am thinking you are already looking at the $300+ range. If so, you have lost most of the market already. Of course, there are many who will pay $1500-$4000 dollars for an airgun that has to be tinkered with to get it to shoot well, so what the hell do I know? LOL!

Well, I know I won't be a customer. (smile)

All my best!

Kerry

The issues that the Daystate rifles had was the sensors would get dusted with lead dust and cause errors. You would have to remove the shroud and clean everything off and reinstall. It was honestly a pain in the butt to deal with.
Yes, that's when many people ruined the thin wires coming out of the chrono.

I think he is doing it as a hobby first, and as a challenge. Nothing is wrong with that.

He can make the electronics for under $10-15 and that's with bluetooth. I can't speak to the moderator part, but if he makes it modular and smaller diameter that can be stuck inside the shroud, etc ...and where the user can add segments, etc , it would be interesting that could fit in the $100 product range.

Very very similar to my NateChrony...
These are awesome projects to learn - but can be painful too!

Mine took over a year to finally get to market. I had one working reliably on my own rifles 9 months ago - getting something to work on different rifles, different calibers, different environments is a real, real large challenge.

Costs - insurance, software, marketing, support, parts, etc... they really add up too!

Watching some EEVBlog - his guide was that you need to sell something at roughly double the cost of what it costs you to make (electronics stuff).

Really nice project and I love that you have your Son involved. Maybe you’ll end up with a retail product one day, or maybe you’ll just have some prototypes in a bin and the memories. Either way, the time spent working on it with your kid will be what you remember.
We will definitely have plenty of prototypes in a bin, lol. We have kept a box full of all our "fails" or as I like to call them "intermediate steps". The other day my son was looking through the box (actually multiple boxes at this point) and said we sure do fail a lot. haha 🤷‍♂️

Slight redesign on the SilentChrony. I didn't like the idea of either having buy a chronograph for each gun or having to deal with removing the moderator to put it on a different gun to use the chronograph.

In this revision I've decoupled the chronograph from the moderator. That way I can have a moderator on each gun and just use one chronograph and swap it from gun to gun as I see fit.

Additionally, if you don't need the chronograph because you are out hunting etc you can use the moderator by itself.

Finally broke down and bought an Oscilloscope. I've wanted one for a while. So this project seemed like a good excuses. (I've also tried to convince my wife I need to buy more airguns too, you know for testing ;) )

Its proving incredibility useful in measuring events that are on the order of a couple of microseconds.

I've been failing for over a year with the NateChrony ;)
New guns, new barrel profiles keep bringing surprises!

Here is one, but I believe there was another:
Yes that was my stand - odd the video you linked didnt get to my stand, as i was opposite BSA! Seems to have had his back to me for 20min & didnt turn around.
Note: It is NOT a moderator (which are highly illegal here in Australia...) - just a tube.

Russ did a vid here with me at the BSS:

Nice.
I believe these types of chrony's will do very well!

Nice.
Will yours be available in the U.S. anytime soon?
I believe its going to do very well!

We ship worldwide & have been shipping orders for over 3 months now (including the US)
We are also currently offering it through Pyramydair - but its drop shipped from Aus currently.
