Modifying grips

I've had my 6004FAS for a while, and shot it as is. Hand all squeezed up, fingers on top of each other and all.

Well, I got tired of having my hand with my fingers overlapping to shoot the gun, with the "target" wood grip that comes on it.

So...I wrapped the gun in a towel, sealed with duct tape and went out o my cylinder head porting tools. Put the 3/4" carbide cutter in the hand tool and started cutting. Cutting, fitting, cutting, fitting, and so on. I finally got the grip to feel good in my hand. What...a difference in shooting. The stippling seemed like maybe I could replicate it in the new surfaces. I got out my carbide tipped electric pencil and tried to match the factory surface. After a coupla false tries, I figured out that I could actually match the factory surface fairly well. Big...difference, should have done this a long time ago.

I also have a Sig Sauer ASP. The grip on that is as smooth as the proverbial, baby's butt. I bought some Talon grip panel (tape?) sheets. The "tan" isn't too far off of the wood color. Not like I'm trying to hide anything anyway. I made a template that fit the right side grip, and transferred it to the sheet of grip surface. I put a couple of black pieces on the guns front and back strap also. The new grip surfaces is thick enough that it also...made the overall grip more comfortable in my hand.

It makes a big difference, if you have a gun with an uncomfortable grip, change it to fit...you. It's well worth the effort.

Some panels made with small effort.

Here's a coupla shots of my modified 6004FAS grip.

The shelf at the bottom was about .300" thick. It's now about .12" thick. I didn't remove that much from the left side as there was no reason to. Just for my fingers and the heel of my hand. You can see some of the angle of the shelf in the bottom photograph. I also made more room for the heel of my hand by removing some from the backstrap area of the grip. I may take some off of what is a pretty big shelf at the back now. Make it a little harder to accidentally break any of the shelf off.
