Modifying pellets with a razor blade.

Has anyone else done this? I used to do it with the Super-H Point pellets, a slight "X" cut across the nose, maybe 1/32 to 1/16th" deep. They would open into an X on impact and rarely exited on the birds that flew in to steal the food from my grandfather's dog's food bowl when shot from my 1377.

I was thinking of trying this when I get my 392 to limit penetration when pest shooting at close range.

Why would u bother when u can use JSB Hades? H&N have the Barracuda Hunter & Hunter Extreme hollow points. H&N Crow Magnums and Terminators. Then there is the old reliable wadcutter that really puts on the smackdown and not over penetrate.

I might date myself, but back when I did this, there were no such pellets and in the moderate velocity my 1377 could achieve, everything over-penetrated ... the .177 can be like an ice pick, straight through - no stopping. And these 'tweaked' pellets made a mess of the critters, and planted them hard. I got the idea from hollow points for powder burners, how most handgun rounds have slits or notches in the edges of the hollow points to help them expand at the lower velocities that handguns achieve...it works for airgun pellets really well too

I plan on zeroing my future rifle (hopefully a 392) at 4/5 pumps and using 5/6 pumps for varmint control. Seeing as chippies are pretty small, that should be plenty of power for them, but I want to minimize the chances of over penetration. Granted the .22 shouldn't drill holes completely through at reduced power, but I want to hedge my bets.
