Airforce More Big Bore Decisions

Hoping you Folks are up for a couple "what if's?"

I have seen good reviews on the 451 Megalodon. It's a pump action. (and more money!) 8 good shots per fill, excellent accuracy.

And the 357 Rattler. Seems to get Raves as an all around gun.

Still leaning towards AF Texan LSS Upgrade with fiber tank in 457.

And finally, is there that much difference in performance between a LSS and an SS Texan? I measured out the length with a tape measure. Wow!

I read a forum post here where the young man, 30 ish I think, wants to buy his "One and Done " gun. He was advised that he was young,
Don't lock yourself in for one gun. Well, I'm old, so this will most likely be the last Airgun.

That's why I am agonizing here, Sorry.

Can someone recommend an article or info on dealing with the heat as I live in OK.

Should I be leary of buying a used scuba-type tank. I'm not into buying a bomb!

TIA

Ken

@Sable44 Those tanks are not going to blow like you are thinking, unless maliciously abused. For an example, firemen strap them on their backs and go into burning buildings every day.

As for the type of airgun you are wanting, there's a lot to offer...

Make a list of your desirable attributes such as caliber, long gun or bullpup, overall length, loaded weight, power level and adjustability, shooting distances and use, shot count, magazine feed or single load/single shot, cocking lever location, pump, or semi auto, style, State laws regarding hunting use and power levels, etc. Another consideration is air consumption, which goes way up with a bigger bore.

With the list of desired characteristics narrowed, look around forum for manufacturer's accuracy history, what negative feedback for each manufacturer, and what are the "required" upgrades and "fixes" to certain manufacturer's guns. With a narrowed list, don't forget to look at YouTube videos to see how each stack up too. Also on that list, that most don't think too much about until the rabbit hole happens is "buy once, cry once" because add-on's and upgrades will raise the cost up closer to the more expensive and proven gun's that have far less "issues."

What do you plan on doing w it? If hunting, what game?

Big bore shooting is expensive in terms of lead and compressed air (and don't under-value the cost of compressed air). So obviously you're going to use up more of both as you go scale up. A repeating gun is cool and all, but ask yourself if it really necessary. It'going to have an over-all higher operating cost and will always come with weight and complexity penalties over a simple tray-loader like the the AF Texan. As a hunter would you need a magazine capacity?

My observation is that if you're hunting white tail sized game, most forum members are in the .45 camp. A .357 and below is more reasonable if you like to shoot and plan on doing a lot of it.

Personally I enjoy shooting bigger boom-boom sticks for their drama, but don't do it as often simply because it's less convenient.

RE: the Texan LSS vs SS I have a .51 LSS and the sound suppression is significant. There's a YT video out there comparing a Texan Vs. Texan LSS and the dB diffrence was comparable to a jack hammer vs. the sound of traffic from within a closed vehicle. Consider the fact that your skull is right next to that soundmaker and the value of the supressor is obvious. The only sound that I notice from my LSS is the hammer and slug strikes.

That said, most hunters are opting to go without the added length and bulk of the LSS. It is enormous.....

Also, w a little care, CF bottles are not an issue

There are a lot of forum members hunting deer & hogs w .308

Shot placement ability counts too, it's not all about power.
Placement!
I know one airgunner who has (legally) taken well over 200 White Tail with an original RAW .357 . Not at all the powerhouse of some of the new sthuff but his shot placement is flawless everytime.
Personally had a .458 DAQ (again less power than ...) that grouped Very well at 100 yards (Dennis makes single point cut rifling) and an original 909 Big-Bore that stayed inside 3-1/2" at 200 yards.

What game would you be comfortable taking with a 30 cal (I assume that is .308?)?
I have Texan.308 and with a 150gr 180 yards on a coyote wouldn't be a problem but Deer rifle ???? some say it's not just about power when i think it helps a whole lot. When shooting those smaller calibers and or under powered pcp you are using a smaller diameter and less weight slug there for your window for a humane kill is a lot lower. If you're any kind of hunter, you know that the perfect shot is golden when it presents itself but it's not always going to happen because of the wind or just at the last second your prey moves. The bigger more powerful is the way i go to an extent, not the minimum

I have the Air Force Texan LSS moderated big bore .510 PCP air rifle hunters combo and it’s awesome! I bought it in November for my fiancé, but we are no longer together. So I am unfortunately, most likely gonna have to sell it, but it is an amazing gun fun to shoot.
