Mutant shorty tuning?

So you folks with the Mutant shorty what FPE tune are you running and shot count?

When I first shot mine it was hovering around 25fpe, then just today second time shooting it it dropped just over 23fpe. I was getting 4magazines of shots both times. So could it just be weather temperature difference or it is breaking it.... Anyways I increased hammer spring to high 26fpe and shot count is now 3magazines. I'm wondering what is the most efficient fpe is...seems like 25fpe.

There is an expert on Mutants on another site, There is also an expert on this site,
Ernest, Or Sniper as he goes by. I know I deal a lot with Dman as he gets my LDC and stuff back pretty fast and I like his prices.
Ernest did my tunes on my Crickets and he is also a Mutant Expert.
Both these guys can pretty much do any thing with a PCP, If you want a bazooka built out of your gun, They can do it.

I get around 4 mags at 25-26 Fpe. I can get an extra mag of usable shots but 4 mags is on the reg.

I think each one is a little differant so do what best for your one with a little trial and error.

it's hard to say what might be ideal without knowing what it's being used for (I.e. range and purpose such a hunting or target shooting). If you are paper punching at 25 yards, you can get a lot more shots than if you were hunting at 80 yards.

So was playing around with the HS and find that a JSB 15.89g has the tightest groups and about SD of 2, tuned at ave 880fps & 27fpe, with one magazine. It gets about 3magazines at this tune. Tried higher but it didn't want to shoot very well, got louder, bigger groups, less rounds. Each quarter turn below 880fps it when down about 20-30fps but each quarter turn above it only went up about 10fps. Biggest thing was the noise level much more noticeable above 880fps, think it reached the barrel length limit.

The HST on my Mutant Standard behaves pretty much the same. Gun is very easy to tune. Earnest loves these, and I can see why. Not sure what magic they put in their valves, but it works great. 3 1/4 turns out for me, and I'm just under 12 fpe wiith JSB15.9s which is perfect for backyard pests. And it's practically silent at that power level. Back up to 1 1/2 turns and I'm at 30 fpe with the same pellet.

I put a "nose ring" in the HST adjuster this weekend to make power adjustment quick and easy (need to post a pic of it but that's what it reminds me of). Took a 1/8" brass rod, sanded it down to the right diameter, 7/64", heated it up and bent it to the right radius, 1/4". The cut it to the right length and bent the ends a little inward so it would stay in place with just friction. Plugged it in the existing holes and it works just great. I don't tighten the set screw, and so far that hasn't been a problem. Love these guns. Would have gotten the shorty but I wanted more shots and less noise.

"DaBinChe"Current tune:
JSB 15.89g, muzzle about 880fps 27fpe range, @50yds 18fpe range

So is 18fpe POI enough for raccoons? head yes? body maybe?
Not really imo. Maybe for a perfect head shot but definitely not a body shot. A tiny squirrel can run away from a body shot from a 22 air gun with greater power at even closer range. Raccoons are tough. You'll likely just cause a painful injury.

I guess it it depends on how much you care about clean kills though. I get an attack of what I can only assume to be a guilt-like feeling if I injure instead of kill an animal. I prefer to avoid it.

I don't care how good of a shot somebody is, there will be an occasion where the animal moves at the last second and causes that head shot to become a body shot. If not that, the wind, a flyer, a damaged pellet skirt or anything else that could cause a slight shift in the POI.

I have a strong preference for 25 cal over 22 for hunting. Animals just die quicker and cause me less problems. Aside from the cruelty, one of the issues with not killing small game instantly is that they run away and die somewhere you don't want them to, like on your neighbors patio. Then you have to quietly sneak onto their property with a shovel to move the body before anyone notices. If they do notice, you have to explain why you are running through their garden with a dead raccoon on the end of a spade.
