My 1st Coyote of 2024 - Head shot

It wasn't long that 2023 passed us by. I have been fishing a lot the past year but the coyotes keep coming in thick this winter.

This one took NSA 38.5 grain slug 910 fps to the brain at 20 yards. His mistake was hanging out too long and being careless.

At this point, I can say this power level does not usually create an exit wound. The brains and blood get blown out of one ear most of the time. This to me, is my ideal power level for these animals on the brain.

Rifle and caliber?

@sasquatch Nice shot per usual. Are you doing something to make them look up and in your direction?
No. They just look around. It looks as if they are always clued in on me, sometimes they are , but most of the time not. I am shooting from a prone position.

Another one showed up later that night but I didn't bother. Get him later. This cold spell coming he'll be roaming

Very good that you got another one. It seems so easy. I must be doing it wrong with my attempts lol.
I don't think you're doing anything wrong. There's been many times I spooked em away and didn't film. It sure is anything but easy. However it is easier right now for me since there has been a population boom in the past year. I'm taking care of it.

I found coyote are very wary and if you make a mistake you don't often get to redeem yourself that day. I have evolved my tactics a bit to improve success. Including changing lighting, only shooting from the prone position to reduce my silhouette, having my gun with a magazine in (not loaded), no movement, cock the gun slowly. Choosing my ammo and power levels as I see right. Most important, wait for a good shot. The last thing I learned last year was they often return if there's something they smell like food. As long as they don't get too spooked. They'll even come in from a different direction and try to smell any potential threat.
