HW/Weihrauch My first springer. HW 35e

Hello all,
A couple of months ago I started exploring airguns. I was thinking of a neighborhood friendly gun that I can shoot off my back deck and enjoy putting holes in paper. I read about pump up, CO2, PCP and springers. Long story short, I decided on a springer. Ultimately I decided the HW 30 in .177 was for me. Problem was, I couldn’t find one for sale. Next on list was HW 50. None for sale. The 35e intrigued me with its walnut stock and long heritage. Also, I love nicely figured woods on musical instruments, furniture, etc. I ask the guys at AoA to pick out a nice one for me. Boy, did they deliver. It has a distinctive ‘flame’ pattern the full length of the stock on both sides kind of like tiger stripes. I realize it’s a completely different gun from the 30 and 50. I’ve had it about 3 days now and am in the break in period. Really enjoying it.
I am going to have many questions for you folks on this forum. Which scope, rings, how to deal with barrel droop, etc. (yes, I know how to use the search button but I like to hear from you experts).
Thanks in advance. Here she is.

Very nice! I have the 30 and the 50 but always wanted a 35. I do like the pattern in the wood. What caliber?

A choice you won’t regret. Nice lumber on that one. Number of things you can do for barrel droop. Sportsmatch, Diana, and others make mounts with droop compensation built in. There are also adjustable one piece and two piece mounts available. Some for elevation only and some for elevation and windage. I just put a Sportsmatch one piece adjustable on my 35E. Not a lot of time with it yet but very happy so far. You need to decide what scope you’re going to use because most mounts will be for either 1” (25.4 mm) scope tube or 30 mm scope tube so you need one that works with your scope. I can’t believe AoA didn’t try to sell you a scope and mounts LOL.

Thanks. The figuring in the wood is very 3d. Changing the viewing angle, the lighter parts turn dark and vice versa if that makes any sense. The pictures don’t do it justice as it looks different from every angle. The rifle is .177.
I’m leaning towards one of the airmax scopes as they seem to receive good comments on this forum. Rings have me confused. I understand mounting and sizing the scope diameter. I have several very nice scopes on other (not air gun) rifles. I have a Leupold vx-6, Zeiss, and aimpoint. I usually mount scopes as low as possible. I see some folks on here mount scopes with the original sights still on the gun. I think I would like to try that. The barrel droop thing has me confused. I understand what it is. How do I know how bad it is and if a need adjustable rings? I understand a canted one piece mount, but these mount’s adjustable for windage and elevation just seem too complicated. Any specific recommendations are appreciated.
Regarding scope magnification, I was thinking 3x9. But, it seems a lot prefer 4x16. Can I really use 16x at 30 yards?
thanks again for your expertise.

Well.. you could remove the rear sight . Then use a straight edge along the top of the receiver tube to down the barrel.

If the gap is the same from breech block to muzzle its stright ,but if the gap is wider as you get to the muzzle end it's drooping.

I use a 2 matched levels and check . Its close enugh as well , but if the barrel level shows fall , well its droop

Not the best of pictures but quick set up to show ( my phone camera blows )

From your picture above i took a card and did the straight edge test off it and it looked fine from that to me.

I figure hw aint known for droop . Definitely not like a rws/diana is.lol

Anyway you gun looks pretty spiffy..

Most people here are going to recommend Sportsmatch mounts. If you don’t have much droop you have a lot of options. Two piece comes in 3 or 4 different heights. You might not use 16X at 30 yards but you can sure use 12x. These guns are incredibly accurate. That gun will shoot 40-50 yards accurately, up to you how much mag you want. Hawkes are good scopes. Link below is what I put on my 35E this week. Very, very happy with it so far. Great glass on a scope in hat price range. I went with the MOA-20 reticle.

Looking at that gun picture it looks pretty stright / little to no droop to me

I guess it could be worse 🤤

I never could get a consistent group with my rws34 after I put a scope on..shot good without the scope but I later on got a 48 and it group well .. same scope and mount, I forgot what scope but I remember the one piece mount that was adjustable any direction. and I think it was a rws..

Just a suggestion. The 35 is designed for iron sights. The drop in the stock and the barrel droop. A diopter on the gun brings this old classic to its best form. It’s fun to shoot and keeps the balance and weight of the rifle as it was intended. Also fixes the barrel droop. A scope can go on any other as you already have. This is my 35E with the diopter and it’s a perfect set up like this. Sorry to all who have seen this picture but it’s a great option for someone who is at this stage with such a gorgeous rifle. You got something special, I’d keep it special.

I use my 35E with the stock sights for pine squirrels around my house almost every day. Little buggers are always nesting in the trees around the house making a mess with the pine cones on my decks. I wack them from 10 to 25 yards and aim for a shoulder or head. I am surprised if I miss. LOL.

I just installed a Maccari spring and Vortek seal. Getting 11pfe with H&N Field Target Trophy's. with a head diameter of 4.50mm. I can keep the group under 1" at 25 yards most of the time. The gun just shoots so well I can't put it down. The new spring is so quiet with a such a smooth shot cycle. No vibration at all.

Great first springer for sure.

The closest thing I have to your 35E is a 50S in .177. It has zero barrel droop. I pulled the iron sights and mounted a 3-9 AO Bug Buster using a pair of Sportsmatch medium height rings with the recoil stop pin. It's a great piece of budget glass and the Sportsmatch rings are rock solid and nice and low. The Hawke Vantage 2-7 AO scope is another great piece of optics for under $200. Your 35E is a beauty!
