My steam punk pellet trap. 👍

Had to make a new pellet trap as the old one started to show severe signs of wear. After some thinking I came up with the idea of forcing the pellet to fly through a bend to slow it down before it hits the back stop. Works just as intended. Catches .25 pellets as if they were cotton. I'm really happy with this little project. And it looks like a steam punk device that could have been in Brazil (the movie), that's a big plus! 🥳
Never mind the tripod, that was just what I had at hand for the testing. I'm going to mount it on something much stronger and sturdier.

Nicely done!
I have thought of this very thing using more of a spiral instead of a simple bend as you have. May be even just use a 'U' bend that the trap can then sit on, with an accessible pellet removal catch at the end as you have made. This would make it more compact.

I thought of an u-shape at first, but landed on this design because it made it possible to get it to ballance perfectly at the point where it is connected to the tripod. The CoG is below the connecting point, so I can put it on a sharp point and it will stay upright. 🙂

That's great - a wacky version of one of those centrifugal traps. Always nice to see a reference to Brazil

Any glancing / off center pellets are probably going to be corkscrewing around that tube losing energy that way. How powerful are the guns you are using this for?

.25 projectiles at about 70 foot-pounds are the most powerful this trap will see. And it handles them pretty well so far. 🥳

Cool idea. Looks like it funnels down to a pretty small exit. Any idea of how many off center (near the sides like I shoot) shots don't make it into the collector? I know the goal would be 100% but that's probably not realistic. What size is the entry 6X6, 8X8 inches? Job well done!!

The entry of the funnel is 8x8 inches wide and it narrows down to about 1,25x1,25 inches at the exit. The length of the funnel is 12 inches.

And I accepted the "off center challenge". I shot 50 round nose pellets and 50 flat nose pellets, standing a little to the side of the pellet trap (at the same angle as I took the picture) and hit the wall of the trap just inside the funnel. Every single pellet did make it into the collector. Just a few fragments of lead was visible in the funnel.

And of course, it had to rain a little before I got to take those pictures...
