Decent conditions for shooting groups today, so I headed to the club to test 3 guns. All guns are shooting 12 foot pounds, all are shooting Air Arms Fields. Everything was shot at 50 yards from a seated position off the knee. Two rifles are springers, one is a PCP.
Here are the groups, then I'll have more to say after.
Group 1
Group 2
Group 3
The second group, ignore the two shots high and to the left, those were all me.
I'm not going to say which groups were the springers and which was the PCP. The point of the exercise was to see how much better the PCP is than the springers. It appears that my competition springer is just as accurate as my competition PCP shot under the same conditions. I'm sure the PCP is more accurate from a bench, but I'm not shooting from a bench. To be fair, the PCP shoots better with a clean barrel. However, it annoys me to have to clean the barrel every 100 shots to keep the accuracy from taking a dive.
The conclusion I've reached is that I should shoot the competition springer for field target this year. I've shot the PCP at two matches this year and had an average result and a below average result, so I don't think my scores will take a huge hit going to the springer.
One of the springers is really set up for Hunter, not WFTF. I was using a janky hamster and a 32x scope for the test. I know this gun has potential to be very accurate, so I'm going to try my hand at making an FT stock for it. Here is a group I shot off the bench with this rifle today just to show that it has potential. Ignore the powder burner holes, it's the 5 shots in the center. That's .67 CTC.
For fun, feel free to guess which group was the FT springer, the hunter springer or the FT PCP.
