Need help sighting in.. :-(

I just purchased a Benjamin Trail NPXL 1500. I mounted the scope and am shooting the Gamo Whisper pellets. 10.4gr I think,
I am shooting from a bench, and the gun is absolutely all over the place. I have 75 rounds or so through it and the barrel smokes after each shot...
I'm SORTA sighted in at 10 yards, but shots continually miss the bull my 2 inches up, 2 inches down etc.. Is there a break in, something I'm doing wrong, bad ammo choice etc.. This is my first adult AG and I am a fairly decent shot with my other powder rifles... any tips?

Be nice now. First and foremost forget what you know about holding a gun, PB practices don't apply to springer pellet guns. As aa mentioned the artillery hold is a key to accuracy in a spring piston rifle.

Also once you've got a good hold for the gun, you will have to test many types of pellets to determine what works best with your gun. This takes time and patience but once done will help with group sizes.
And not to sound mean or rude, but eventually you will find that a better(quality) springer likely made in germany will shoot even better.
Welcome to pellets guns and enjoy your path to ruin :)

As you ascend the Mountain of Air Gun Mastery you must drop to the wayside all of your prior expectations of your capabilities... all faith you may have once placed in your muscle memory and eye acuity... all those things that you believed made you a competent shooter... it must all tumble out of your ears, slough off of your shoulders, dribble down your back and sides until it becomes a cascade of useless shooting paradigms, meaningless laws of the accurate gun, and deeply personal points of pride in your shooting ability, all tumbling down your duck pants/Levi's/Carhartts/whatev and being ground into the mud of the unfamiliar, strangely quiet shooting range where guns pop and twange, burble and snort, whisssper and click, and where the loudest sound you hear is the 'THWACK' of pellets cutting paper and cardboard, punctuated by the tinny 'PLINK' of pellets tearing through tin cans, spinning steel spinners, knocking down Rocking Rats, and basically giving grown ups the chance to have all the fun they were so unfairly (yet perfectly sanely) denied as 11-year-olds with too much free Summertime to fill and too little life experience to set limits on the escapades.

You have stepped into Air Gun Nation, where Tribalism is encouraged (LOW END SPRINGERS ARE THE BOMB, BABY!) and shared experience, full-on mentoring, and even a little formal tutorial work at the hands of acknowledged masters can be found. Be calm, speak in polite tones, keep your wits about you and your blades sharp... and watch out for the ROUSes...

May I advice some better pellets? Those Gamo things are crap, good for shooting cans at 15 yards but that's it. There's a reason why they are so cheap compared to the better brands. Try JSB, RWS or H&N in different head sizes (there are test boxes with different head sizes, weights and types) from both H&N and JSB. Break in could be somewhat of an issue, but not at 10 yards.

Edit: oh, and clean that barrel for Pete's sake, most people don't clean it after they buy a new gun, but it's absolutely necessary to get all the dirt and grease out (that's there to protect the barrel from rusting during storage). If it still diesels (smokes), you need to clean the piston and re-grease it. If you get to that point, let me know and I'll help you through the process.

If and when you get a chance try to get yourself a sampler pack from Straight Shooters I don't know what your financial situation is like but hopefully you can find other assortment of pellets to try. Now after that you have to probably try to use the artillery hold as other members suggested. And also check all of your screws to make sure they are tight and secure. And I'm not sure if you said if it's a 177 caliber but try to use 10 grain pellets just in case if your gun is brand new and it's dieseling. Give that a try and report back to us and see if he has anything has changed. Good luck with your search

Always have your scope on the highest power setting when you're siteing it in . That thing about artillary hold is legit. Very interesting. Someday you should get a PCP gun though. It's great if you have a SCUBA tank along with it. The best way to get one of those is off of eBay, carbon fiber 4500 psi SCBA tank then make your own fill adapter. The gun you would probably want to get would be a 22 caliber gauntlet because they are the bomb. Night and day accuracy between a PCP and a Springer. Also you should cite your stuff in at 30 yards.
