Need help with a Hawke Airmax scope

I think you misunderstood the question/procedure. The focus of the reticle and the target are two separate things.

You use the ocular adjustment to get the reticle clear. This is best done against a white background or maybe the sky. Google how to do this. Once you get it clear it will be clear at all powers.

You adjust the target clarity with the AO feature of the scope depending on the distance.

I have an airmax also and they are very fine and hard to see against any kind of darker background. That's just the nature of the beast. It kinda sucks.

Another reason to spend the extra bucks for a top quality scope. In my many years of shooting, I also bought many less expensive scopes only to have issues after purchase. After realizing how much I was spending and then trying to sell or even give away, I got smarter and spent the big bucks for quality scopes. Been a Leupold and Burris man for the past 30 years, no complaints and no scope issues over those past 30 years. During that time, how many scopes has the average airgunner gone thru??

If you have adjusted the eye focus to your eye getting the reticle clear and adjust the parallax to get a clear picture at different magnification (you will have to slightly change parallax every time you change magnification even at same yardage), then you probably have a misaligned lens. This happens every once in a while and is a warranty item and will get your optic replaced. Other than tile for shipping you’re good for getting the issue fixed.

Thanks for the help. I think there is something wrong with this scope. I have had lots of scopes and never had one like this one. I think I will send it back and get something else.

I have had Leupold's in the past and have liked them all.

Will Leupold scopes work on an air rifle?

I have a PCP gun. Which Leupold would you recommend? I would like something like a 3x9 power in a 1" dia scope.

Good advice above. Can I add? When adjusting the ocular eyepiece. Your eye may try to focus when looking thru the scope for long periods. I find it easier to focus if I start with the focus ring screwed out. Screwing in just till the reticle is crisp. Looking away often. I also find it better to focus at the highest zoom. Oh also if you can look into the sky adjust the parallax to infinity while adjusting the eyepiece.

A good method to get the reticle in focus;

- set to max magnification.

- Set the parallax adjust to 100 yards or more.

- look through the scope while pointing at a white wall or something equally bright. You want the wall to be blurry out of focus.

- Now with no background to distract you,. adjust the eyepiece focus until the reticle is sharp.Don't leave your eye looking through the scope too long, Keep looking forward with both eyes no scope, then back to the scope to make sure your eye does not try to get used to the reticle being out of focus and compensate.

- Once you have it so that every time you look through the reticle is clear, try different magnifications.

FYI, I also have a Hawke Airmax 30 4-16x44mm SF Compact, and though it's not my favorite scope, it does not display the issue you are having. If you are unable to get it to work, I agree that you might have a bad copy of that scope.
