New deal on "black" filter

Saw this deal on a filter/dryer on eBay today, looks pretty good. While not as large as the "gold" filter, its much larger than the small filters that come with the Tuxing or Yong Heng compressors. You could put a two inch cotton tampon on the inlet side and a one inch cotton tampon on the exit side and fill the middle with Zeolite 13X Molecular Sieve salted with color changing silica beads. $30.71 with free shipping.

@1shooter, good idea, and yes, this could be used between the hand pump and rifle. It would be easier than the gold filter since there isn't as much volume to fill when using it with a hand pump, but it still should be effective.

@usafang67, yes, despite being an Air Force weenie, you got my name right. ;) Just messing since I did 27 years active duty in the Navy. I listed this since its smaller, and cheaper than the "gold" filter, but still should be effective. For those with a hand pump, or if you have a Yong Heng or similar and don't fill that much, it could be ideal. I don't know of any digital moisture filters that work at 4500 psi, but there are high pressure moisture indicators or "eyes" that can be placed at the high pressure outlet of the filter. I think they change color or indicate somehow, but they aren't cheap. The ones I've seen were about $100 or so...

I would check the pressure rating on that brass (if it is brass) female QD. I have one that looks identical that came with my chinese compressor and was told by some fellow members (who I trust know their stuff) on another forum that I should dump the brass fitting immediately because they are only rated for co2 type pressure and not hpa. I guess their has already been talk about these brass fittings failing (though I have not seen it)? It made very good sense to me so I ordered some steel fittings to replace mine.

Not trying to rain on the parade just figured I'd pass this info on to as many people as possible. This filter would still be a great deal even if you had to buy a steel foster fitting. Be safe and take care!

I can see where that would be a concern. Did you know the fitting that came with my Cricket was brass on the thread part, or even I think the one that come with my FX, or Daystate or Brocock, can't remember exactly? The rating on this filter is 400 bar, and I hope its rated accurately. The filter wall thickness itself it pretty robust, as is the gold filter. But spending $5 to replace it with a stainless steel one can't hurt in any case...

Centercut, thank you for your responce and bringing this to our attention.

*NOTE* in the description of the ebay item it reads,

Water-Oil Separator only, Water-Oil Separator with quick connector or Water-Oil Separator with quick connector and hose are available for choice

No other options other than quanity but found another on ebay that stated with hose and fittings but around $66 ... link

Again, thank you for commenting as I need to get something like this. Just need to work out what to get for the best price. Also side note, Centercut, great ground squirrel stories... keep them coming.

@1shooter, Good point. I e-mailed him and asked. Even if its just the filter with the O-rings and cotton tampons, to add a male foster QD on each end is less than $10. That's assuming you already have hoses with female foster QDs on them. I have lots from various projects...PM me if you need any... Thanks for the ground squirrel compliment, but Nick (socaloldman) who I shoot with is a better story teller than I am, and also a better shot by the way. ;)

How about this one for $38?

I think that this size filter will be perfect for Hong Heng and booster type pumps. I just replaced the guts in my larger gold type filter after 9 months of light to moderate use there was no evidence of any moisture at all. There wasn't even any oil staining on the tampons. The OE filter that is installed on the Yong Heng, is catching almost all the contaminate's. I think that this one is still a bit large for hand pumping. Remember it will have to be pressurized from empty every time you top your gun off and you will probably need a second hose if you don't want to connect it directly to your gun. You could use a check valve but that would not be practical because you would also need another bleed screw on the gun side. The pressure would likely bleed down after a few days anyway.

Is this something I could put between my rifle and hand pump?

I would say no unless you are physically fit enough to re-pressurise the filter every time. Before getting my Yong Heng compressor, I was also using a Hill hand pump ( Mk3 ). I dont trust that small bottle of molecular sieve that came with the pump and replaced it with a big bottle ( 1.5 liters I think ) of silica gel. It seems to be doing the job as I did not see any water being spit out of the air bleeding hole of the pump upon relieving the pressure.

Wasn't too far behind you in total service years. I did 23, KC135 Tankers(aerial refueling) and yes we "passed some gas" to you Navy guys on many occasions. Although I won't say if it was the expensive or the cheap stuff since it was not self service :)

I also looked and could not find any gauge that operated in a high psi environment either......cheap that is.

@eaglebeak, I think the ends are threaded M10*1 if you're looking for Foster type QDs for each end...

Thanks, Mike. I'm aware of the thread sizes. I have some fittings and a hose or two with M10x1 ends. I was looking on Aliexpress last night and I found a few sites over there that were selling these with hoses and fittings for less than I paid on Fleabay. I also saw an ad for those M10x1, brass quick connects that come standard on the Chinese equipment. They claim that these fittings are extra strong and rated to 350Bar/9000 psi. Yes, I know 9000 psi is more like 600 Bar. Another translation quirk, but what they are trying to say is these fittings are well strong enough to handle the pressures that these products will see. I have noticed that the tolerances on these are tighter than other fittings and that is why people are having problems mixing them together.

I took apart the small filter that came with my YH compressor. Cut a filter in half that came with small filter. I had on each end. In the middle I put some A13 beads and not getting any moisture. I as surprised it's working that well. Will have to keep checking it after 2-3 fills for moisture and oil.

I'm running my compressor in a room with humidity at 55%. Fill times are much faster because I'm not filling the long gold filter.

I'm going to buy one of those smaller black filters to see how those work.

My filter arrived today and to my surprise, it included fittings and hose. It also came packed with charcoal and I assume silica gel media. After swapping the fittings for something more universal, I hooked it up to my hand pump to check for leaks. When I reached about 200 Bar, I heard a large pop. It sounded like an Oring bursting. It only dropped about 30 Bar and was losing air to slowly that I could not hear where it was coming out. I had a tub of water nearby that I use for cooling my compressor. All the joints were good which just left the hose and sure enough, it had a small pin-hole. The hose in question has a working pressure of 630 Bar printed on it. Anyway, I shot the supplier an Email and I expect that they will offer me some sort of discount. I wasn't expecting a hose so any discount will be a bonus.
