New FT rifle /scope suggestion

Hello all,

New member here in the greater Sacramento area. I started getting into FT shooting back in the late 80’s in SoCal. I bought a used Daystate CRX from a Yellow Forum member but realized I didn’t have the time to dedicate myself to the sport.

Fast forward 40 some years and now I have the time and money to enjoy this sport. I don’t know where to start looking for rifles and scopes.

I'm interested in shooting PCP in the Open class.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Bill

Set a budget. Go to a match. See and possibly shoot some of the guns/scopes before used. Inquire as to price of whatever appeals to you. Who knows, if someone there has a rig for sale you might just pick up a bargain. Uj
You can score really great gear for good prices if you show up at a match and put the word out that you’re thinking of buying a competition grade rig. I believe a lot of it doesn't get listed on the forum classifieds because it doesn't need to be.

For $3k total I'd consider 1) Sightron 10-50x60 FT model scope 2) a TM1000 built and tuned by Martin Rutterford of Airguns USA or a USFT. At full retail those exceed $3k but with a bit of patience to find good used stuff I think you can hold budget with room to spare.

It’s funny you mentioned a USFT. I visited Tim and purchased a custom paintball gun, a R7 and a Theoben. He showed me his USFT project. It was cool to be able to visit his shop.

Thats a nice CRX! I sold mine years ago. Shouldn’t have done that. There was a guy on the old yellow forum that saw my post when I first got it and said he had one and only knew 1 other guy that had a CRX.

Are you the original owner?

I am an Air Arms fan . But the TM1000 and S6 Sightron 10-50x60 set up for Open not Hunter is probably the best set up for 3000 dollars. The next step above this would cost at least 5000 dollars and be only slightly better.

The biggest thing is service parts and repair ability. For competition go with tried and true. It’s more about practice than gear but you don’t want something that will ware out as you practice and not be good for competition.

Thanks for the suggestions and advice. Looking through my storage, I realized I still have the Nikko Sterling scope I took off of the CRX.
I emailed Nick at Thomas airguns. I really like his design. I’m probably going to put an order in for one of his FT rifles.View attachment 539069View attachment 539070
His name is Mike.

Uh it'll be a long wait, it's worth it but that's a long time to not be enjoying shooting FT. I waited 9 months for mine but I had my old USFT to hold me over until my Thomas arrived.

I suggest putting your deposit down ASAP to get you in line then buy a used FT rifle in the meantime. You might want to consider shooting in HFT or unlimited as well but unlimited is not a AAFTA recognized division.

Yes sorry Mike is his name. Not sure why I typed Nick.
I’ll look at HFT options since I probably won’t get the Thomas till fall.

You do realize there's probably at least a years wait on one of Mike Niksch(THOMAS) rifles. Definately worth the wait but you may want to consider another option if you wanted it this FT season 😉
