Other New guy looking for recommendations

I have a ton of regular guns but I am looking to get into a decently nice pcp rifle. My main reason is so I can shoot in my backyard which is in the suburbs but I’d also like it to be useful for hunting small/medium sized game. I am thinking .25cal but I am open for recommendation there as well.

My front runner as of right now is the Brocock Ghost HP. Is this a good choice? I also want something that is going to be quiet so I don’t piss off my neighbors. I want something that is set it and forget it type of gun that has very good build quality and isn’t prone to breaking.

Yes, that is an awesome choice. I'm not sure on the noise level, but checks all the other boxes. May be quiet too, I just don't know.

I would get a .22 unless you really need the extra power. I guess it depends on what "medium" size game is
I’m thinking skunks, raccoons etc. I have plenty of guns for anything else. Are there any other recommendations for guns I should look at?

Also what do you recommend for a pump? I’m thinking a hand pump to start but if they are a pain in the ass then I might as well just get an electric one. How easy/ quick are the hand pumps to use? What do most of you guys use?

Can't speak to English guns, owners love them, I'm sure they're great, just too pricey for me. Eastern European guns, IMO, offer best value. "Taipan Veteran," and Airgun Technology's (AGT) "Uragan 2," are good choices to search in archives. (Upper right page corner Search function.) Also, search, "Yong Heng," and "GX-CS4," as these are popular compressors. Best of Luck, WM

Many...of the current guns can fill your needs. The Ghost is a great choice, the AGT line of guns are also good choices (Uragan 2, Vulcan 3). Many like the Vixen too.

Caliber wise, all of my rifles are .22 . Target wise, it works great.

One note - I don't know where you are, or what "suburban" means in your area, but you MANY want to verify with the local police dept. that it's ok to shoot in your back yard. I live in in an "unincorporated" area of the city. I was told..."no"...

Have fun.

Mike

The BRK lineup is a very solid one… either of your choices is good. If you plink and target shoot alot. A .22 is very versatile from plinking to medium size pests… You would have a very hard time pumping them up to full pressure with a handpump… I own four BRKs and have owned five different models… They are solid in the field performers…

I live in a extremely quiet private neighborhood and shoot all my airguns in my backyard. I recorded this video shooting one of my AvengeX .25 cal rifle with a Hugget Snipe moderator @ around 900 fps shooting the JSB 25 grains pellets. My neighbor chickens and birds are heard much louder than the bark of my rifle. Despite his relative affordable price in my opinion this airgun meets the characteristics you are looking for in a airgun.

I have the BRK Ghost Plus in .22. Twenty-two caliber is recommended. It has the most pellet selection of any caliber. I have it setup for backyard plinking at 22 fpe (the lowest it will go). It will go north of 30 fpe at full power level. Plenty of power for backyard pests. I get about 200+ shots per fill and it is very quiet without a moderator at that power level. It is definitely a "Buy Once, Cry Once" rifle but I have had zero issues with it. I would not want to hand pump the rifle. I suggest a small compressor or purchase a SCBA bottle and dive shop it.

Here is the rifle and the gallery I shoot at. Tin cans are the way to go.

I have a Brocock Bantam with a bottle that gets a 3400psi fill. I wouldn't even attempt to fill it with a handpump. It's a good idea to have a hand pump for backup, and they are pretty cheap if you get the generic Chinese pump. I have one of them and a Hill pump, not really much difference. You don't have to fill the gun to maximum pressure to shoot some. Hand pumping a gun with a tube to 3000psi is a task, and that is a much smaller volume than the bottle. So while it is doable, IMO it is a "pain in the ass".

The GX line of compressors seem to be pretty popular right now. If you are going to fill the gun directly, one of the smaller ones will be fine. If you are going to use a tank, you will need the CS4 to fill the tank.

I would focus on a good 22Cal to keep the noise down. A good 22Cal can take down medium pests with good placement. Taipan Veterans have a good reputation in all categories including quietness. Tony has a handful of Gen 1:

I've got an AGT Uragan2 and a Taipan Veteran (1). Both excellent, but if buying today I would probably go with a Taipan Veteran 2 Standard. The negatives; Both are heavy and My Uragan2 is pretty darned long (but its got loads of power, so...).

Especially for target shooting I feel the mid location of the Taipan Veteran2's cocking lever is a big plus when you are doing a lot of shooting over the older Taipan Veteran which is sometimes referred to as the Veteran1, as it's cocking lever almost adjacent the butt plate, which I feel makes it much slower to load. Nevertheless, I'm not selling my Veteran1.

The Veteran2 comes either as a Tactical that has a bottle which gives you more shots per fill, but some don't care for the look or bulk, While the Veteran 2 that is not a 'Tactical', uses a tube... which is a little trimmer, different strokes.

Talon's tunes has both the AGT (Vulcan3 & Uragan2) and the Taipan Veterans.

I've got the Nomad electric pump - no issues, but if I pick up another, I will probably try a 'GX Pump' next.

So I caved and just bought the ghost hp in 22cal because it seemed to be highly recommended over the 25cal. I was also able to secure a sale that brought the gun to right around $2100 which seems to be a pretty decent price all in!

But I have to say, this has to be one of the most productive and helpful forums I’ve been a part of in a long time. I have a feeling I am going to want a couple more air guns in the near future so I will definitely take some of these other options into consideration. I can’t thank everyone enough though for the thoughtful responses.

Once it comes in maybe I will attach some pics of my first target?!

Next step is the moderator haha! I haven’t did ANY research on this front though so I am going into this with a blank slate. Might be nice to have two. One small one for lightweight carry and another for the back yard that has maximum suppression. I am open to any and all recommendations!

Is there a “best” or are they all pretty equal? Id rather just buy once if possible.
I havent tried them all, but can tell you it depends on your ears and rifle and environment. Typically the bigger diameter and length the better they work, but each design can also change the pitch/tone. I have a Sumo I really like and a Huggett snipe I really like. To my ears Huggett is a tad better than the Donnys size for size. If I needed another I would try a 0DB or Falx just to see what they are like.

The Ghost has a pretty good factory shroud too which will also really help. If it were me I would look at a 0DB simply because I think they look rad on a Ghost.
