New guy needing help to spend some money

Hello I’m new to PCP and would like some recommendations. I’ve been In many shooting disciplines throughout my life and only get excited with guns that shoot little bitty groups. I have a black bird problem “grackles” in my backyard that I have been using my suppressed .22 long rifle on for the last few years. With current ammo shortages and more homes being built in my area I started looking into air rifles. After a little “very little” research I bought a Gamo swarm maxxum, needless to say I’m not satisfied what so ever with the accuracy so I jumped down the PCP rabbit hole.
I have a budget of roughly $1500.00 for the rifle, what I have in mind is a Tiapan Veteran and I’m curious if I’m on the right track track here? What other rifles in that price range would you recommend? Also .22 or .25? I’m having a hard time shorting through the available information out for caliber choice.
finally what are some solid options out there for glass?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks

I have a Veteran Standard in .22, and it's a great rifle, simple, robust, accurate, great trigger. But, it' a bull pup, and you either like them or not. Compared to a well balanced traditional rifle, it's like putting a scope on a piece of 2X12 board, heavy and awkward. If it were not so good in every other aspect, I would have sold it already. If I'm grabbing a rifle to fend off the squirrels, it's usually either the Daystate Revere, FX Royale 400, or Weihrauch HW 100. Those are three I would recommend for your consideration. I suggest .22, as it has more than ample power, and will be a bit quieter. In fact, for grackle control, a .177 would be fine. My HW 100 in .177 is darn near silent, and a squirrel killer. Lots of good scopes, I especially like the Athlon Midas TAC. And you need to plan on $3K as entry level for the entire package.

From everything I have seen I think the Tiapan is a nice rifle. One you may want to consider are the FX Dream line due to its multiple configuration . I have the Dream line compact Tach and it is very accurate, lite and the folding stock makes it very handy. Adding the bottle is definitely a plus. If you are looking to get by on about half that the Benjamin Akela at around $600 is a real bargain. I set one up for a friend and for me it turned out to be a real shocker wish it had been around when I started out.

On scopes the Gen 2 Athlon Argus is a nice scope for the money and as you go up there line they just keep getting better and better. I have had no experience with anything under the Argus. Pellets are huge for tiny groups more so in air rifles than powder burners, JSB is a good place to start.

Little bitty groups are definitely interesting, you should be able to end up with a very accurate rifle in that price range. I’d consider a used FX Crown for sure. The .25 I have is awesome, but I believe that I’d pick a .22 if I was doing it again. 350 pellets in the .25 tin and 500 pellets in the .22 tin for the same price. I started out with a hand pump and a .25 marauder and liked shooting so much I upgraded quickly, now I have several high end guns and a Alkin compressor lol. I know how disappointing an inaccurate gun is lol, I also started out with a cheap springer. Once you get a super accurate PCP rifle you’ll be hooked! Welcome to a great hobby!

I’ve looked real hard at the Murader, I just want to make sure I get something that I won’t grow out of anytime soon. What are your thoughts on growing with the Murader, think you would be happy long term?

Yes, it's a great first pcp rifle. Plenty of support from Crosman if you need it aa well as aftermarket parts and support....but ya can't have just one air rifle

+1 on the FX Dreamline. I was shooting in my backyard last night with mine (22) on medium. It's super quiet. You only really hear the impact if you hit something hard (tree stumps, metal, etc). Mine came with the Donny FX moderator. FX guns can take a bit to dial in but they are fun and are endlessly customizable. Scopes are kind of a personal preference. I really like Leupold.

Just remember Hondo1

If you are going to go with a Marauder or an Akela (both in stock currently - a real bonus in these times), order directly off the Crosman site and use the AGNATION discount code for 20 or 25% off the price.

Lots of folks seem to start off with these guns (or wish they had), and they can grow with the shooter. And be realistic as well - We all know that once you get into PCP air guns, this purchase won't be your last!😉

While you are at it I might recommend that you look at the Benjamin Recharge compressor as well. Mine is holding up really well and it can be used to quickly fill guns directly, or to fill bottles later if you get into those.

The Nomad2 and compressors like it, waterless, oiless types, have around a 20 hour lifespan before they need a complete rebuild. That is if they are able to be rebuilt some are not. But they still fill a niche area in that most can run off of 12V so can go with you and charge up your gun with a running car. If you are careful with them and do not abuse them they can last a year or two for the most part depending on your air usage.

The Yong Heng and other water cooled units last much longer but run on 110 or 220V.

The Yong Heng "Simple" version least expensive does not have a water separator you need one.

The "Auto Stop" version shuts off near 3000psi probly not a good thing for most people.

So you likely want the "Hardcover" or "Set Pressure" versions your choice on the 110V or 220V.
