New guy needing help to spend some money

What do y’all think about the FX Maverick VP for what I’m looking for?

The only FX product I would recommend is the old Royale platform, and they are hard to find. Their new rifles pack a bunch of features, most of them work most of the time. I don't think they are the best for a novice buyer.

You asked about buying used. As a first-time buyer, you might want to limit used considerations to those offered by dealers, with some limited buyer protection.

In the very short time I spent owning a Maverick, I personally concluded that I would prefer to either spend a little less money on one of the Dreamline model guns, or a little more to get an Impact.

Regardless I really wouldn't get an aluminum bottled gun like the VP model. The lighter weight CF bottle really makes a difference to me in the weight, balance and handling. Although this would potentially be a non-issue if you will only be shooting the gun off a bench.

I think the Maverick would be an excellent choice myself and you would not be outgrowing it any time soon. FX makes some very good guns for the most part. Easy caliber or barrel liner changes are a definite benefit. I have shot my Impact as a .177, .22, .25 and now I have a .30 barrel for it. It shoots lights out in every caliber, with pellets or slugs, so no complaints with the barrel liner system old or new. The liners are the same on the Impact and Maverick. The Maveric is also very tunable so in the days where it's hard to find ammo it can be tuned to shoot something else.

You can always upgrade the bottle for a CF unit later from the classifieds.

We’re blowing past his budget. Frankly if I was starting over I’d buy a used daystate huntsman to start. Maybe even a non regulated gun. Just a super nice rifle. FX makes good guns I wouldn’t hesitate. Compressors. If you are young and plan to stay with the sport. Just buy the Alkin and be done with it or go with biohazardmans recommendations. One or the other don’t mess with Mr Inbetween. If this is too much $ I’d suggest a really high quality spring gun. Very few of us have just one. To much time spent trying to find the “best” gun. Try to find the one that’s best for you. I’m still working at it. My impact is on paper the best but who ever said it’s like shooting a four ft long 2x12 with a scope on it has made a real point. Not that there aren’t plenty that think pull pups are the cats whiskers . That’s the most critical thing you need to figure. Huntsman Dreamline maverick cricket all good. Used makes sense to me if the price is right.

Woah now slow down there partner lol. I get it, that springer was horrible and now you want to buy something that won’t have you second guessing whether it’s the gun or the shooter that is off.
Before you spend a mortgage payment on a PCP setup only to find out it’s not for you, I would buy a high end springer like an Air Arms tx200, HW95/97, Walther LGU or Diana 54. At 50 yards and under these springers can be just as accurate as some of the best pcp’s. No doubt you will not be disappointed by the build quality and accuracy of any one of those. You might try one of these and find out it is all you need. If you don’t like it, post it in the AGN classifieds. The way I see it: If you don’t like the springer you sell it, you may take a $100 hit. If you find out PCPs aren’t for you and decide to sell the equipment, you’ll be out hundreds of dollars.

*looks like bubblerboy already beat me to the high end springer recommendation lol. Smart man

This is decent advice, not sure I can kick the PCP bug that has bored itself to my brain though.

I personally don’t think the nomad is the way to go but otherwise you’re on the right track. Get on the compressor sub forum and read as much as you can . PCP’s are really nice if you shoot them enough to justify the $. And if you need the additional range . If you are shooting inside 40 yards you just don’t need a PCP but then I don’t need 75% of what I’ve invested in the hobby. Buy what you think you will like and plan to find something you will like better . It’s like cars. They will all get you there but most of us are always at least dreaming of the next one ( more expensive one )

I can tell by what you said you’re already hooked and will have multiple guns in no time.

I owned a similar compressor to the nomad that lasted me almost two years. The fill up time is decent for such a tiny compressor. Can fill an average sized gun in 2-3 minutes. And the portability coupled with the ability to power it with the car is awesome. It was well worth the price for the time it served. Although if money is not an issue I’d skip the nomad and go straight to the alkin with a small and large CF tank.

Have Not heard about the " Nomad2 and compressors like it, waterless, oiless types, have around a 20 hour lifespan " Might you have a couple links?

Even at the proposed 20 hour span & being lubed at reg intervals..... @ approx 5 min fill........ is 12 per hour = 240 fills total.

That is alot when compared to going to a scuba shop paying for a tank........paying for the fill and the travel expense and Time spent.......

Even @ twenty hours it does not seem to bad and there is still a possibility of rebuild at Pyramid if needed, Jus' bought a USED Nomad at $450.00 with only 4 fills on it and free shipping.

Please forward article / information on run 20 hours and need rebuild.

Thanks

Hmmmmmmmmmm? " Yong Heng compressor " IMO the.............. " Nomad2 " is a far better way to go I have one and do not even have to use a Scuba tank.........Just take the Nomad in its carrying case with me hook up to my Car Batt 12Volt fill my FX Gun bottle 5 min repeatedly while hunting......... and shoot.continously after each 5 min fill...then when I get home use 120Volt to run Nomad as well to fill FXBottle.......

No tubes mess water bucket no Hassles .

Katran showed up today, I’m already in love with it!

Yesterday evening was my first time shooting it, it prints TI TT groups at 36 yards “across my back yard”. Once dialed in I killed six grackles and two rabbits. This morning while drinking my coffee I took out 16 grackles! This is my only experience with PCP but I can tell you I’m hooked! Again not much experience but the Katran is everything I could have hoped for and more.
