OH ILL . better check local laws if your in a city or sub-division before you buy something you can't use .

a .22 should do just fine for both critters. .177 is fine also but .22 is easier to handle .

IF your just planning on in the yard stuff you might really consider a break barrel HW50 as your first experience , just a gun and pellets and your ready for pests / targets for practice . Very high resale also ,
