HW/Weihrauch New HW97K

I started with a pcp and liked air rifle shooting so much I decided to try a springer. I got a HW35 and was smitten. Suddenly, I no longer found hand pumping the tank of my pcp tolerable. Sold the pcp today and realized I needed another springer. When I got the hw35 I was actually looking for an hw30 but couldn't find one so I bought the hw35 and preordered a 30. Once again, I looked for a 30 in stock and couldn't find one so you can see that I had no choice but to buy the hw97. I ordered it from AoA and do not know when it will arrive but there is no point in waiting till the last minute. So, I am going through my available scopes and have a Vortex Crossfire II 6-18X44 and a Votex Strike Eagle 4-24X50. The gun will be shot off the bench at bullseye targets similar to the Green Monster, for score. I would shoot field target if there were any such shoots in my area but no luck there.

Not having seen the rifle in the flesh I am wondering if the better scope (Strike Eagle) might be too large and heavy for the rifle. Any thoughts on the best size scope would be helpful. It seems like a heavy enough rifle to handle a large scope, especially with the underlever cocking, but I am just guessing.

Not too large at all. Plenty of guys here use their 97K for Field Target so they have big 10-50x60's on top. That being said, I find my Sidewinder 30 4-16x50 is the perfect fit for that gun.

Congrats, the hw97k is a real gem. Mine is my most accurate spring gun. Built like a tank and IMHO best when shot from a bench.

Follow up question. I bought SportsMatch rings with retaining pin, but the pin is not a tight fit in the receiver hole on my 35. It seems to be holding on my hw35 with pressure alone but do you use loctite or something similar on the retaining pin?

Congratulations on the 97. I love mine in 177. My just sports a Hawk 3-10-40 I just shot from my bench mainly out to 50 At steel. If I was a paper shooter I’d probably get a scope with more power You have caught the springer BUG. I to started with 1 now have 7

The addiction can snowball quickly if you aren't careful. Its no fun being careful though so when is number 8 showing up?

Great shooting gun. Has a little heft but balances well. If you’re shooting bench rest that won’t matter much. I have an Athlon 4-14 x 44 FFP on mine and haven’t felt like I needed more scope but I stay inside 50 yards. Which caliber?

.177 and I have a large selection of pellets. I love the initial process of seeing what ammo a rifle prefers.

The pin isn't supposed to be a tight fit. Put rear ring on loosely slide the ring rearward until the pin rest against the rear of the hole. Then tighten the dovetail clamp to specs. Usually 55 inlbs on bolts with a 4mm hex key. Be sure to degrease deep into the dovetail grooves. Add the front ring, scope and ring caps. Snug those down then tighten the front ring clamp to 55 & the caps to 16 I lbs.

I see your puppy, and raise you a puppy. We apparently inherited two dogs two days ago. That and construction has cut into my airgun shooting.

They look like good pups! You're a good person taking them in with nearly no warning like that. Definitely not easy to do.

I'm basically inheriting this one too. I told them puppies were hard but they insisted. 3 months later, boom. I get the pup lol. He's a God boy though just needs some training. He's got red bull in his veins it seems because he just wants to play 24/7

The good news is that he's small so at least he'll fit in my range bag! Who knows, he may even make for a good squirrel dog

Were you looking for a 177 cal HW30S? Otherwise, AoA has had the 20 & 22 cal in stock for a while. When you look at their spring piston page the 177 cal is showing by default but if you click on it and choose the 20 or 22 cal you will see that both are in stock.

Hi sjs. If you've never held one your in for a surprise. They R heavy and solid so the bench it is. But that weight is 1 of the reasons they shoot so well. All of my HWs prefer H&N FTT pellets (of course they do) so try all 3 head sizes. I have a target posted somewhere here on AGN from my HW97K. A 25 yd ,5 shot group, that looks like 1 shot. I mean literally 1 shot. I need to get it framed. The pellet, H&N FTT 5.55. The 1 thing I had to adjust when I 1st got it was this nagging little 2nd stage creep. Once I got that sorted I shot that 1 hole group. The scope I went with is the Hawke Airmax 30 WA SF 10 X 44 with illuminated reticle
