HW/Weihrauch New HW98

Took delivery of the newly styled HW98 a few months back and working to get acquainted. I'm still learning to love the new look. All factory thus far minus some stock screws and polishing on the trigger guard. Have a Maccari kit for "someday". Sure loves the H&N 10.65 Baracuda's. 5 shots at 25 meters on a fairly calm eve. Pellet in the hole for perspective. Shooting 15# so a bit of finesse required, but perhaps that's just me? Definitely a keeper despite my slow warm up to the new aesthetics. As is typical , the quality is high and is what we've come to expect from a fine German rifle.

Wow, I didn't know they were making a new style of stock. Looks great. I have the old style HW98 in .22 cal. One thing to watch out for is the threaded barrel extension. No matter how much I would snug it up it would loosen up after a few shots. Blue Loctite fixed that. I have the same BKL rings as well with a Hawke 2-7 up top. Even with the rings properly torqued down, they would creep backwards under recoil. I added a Sportsmatch recoil stop behind the rear ring. Problem solved. I love the new look. Beautiful rifle.

Excellent results. 15 FPE is fine if you get results like that. I have a 20 cal 98 running very close to 16 and a 177 95 running very close to 15. Both shoot very accurately. My 177 97 has been tried between 15 and 13 FPE with no noticeable difference in accuracy. It now sits around 14.5.

I think cutting power to increase accuracy does make it easier to shoot accurately. As well as adding weight. Both reduce effects of recoil. Neither actually make the gun more accurate. They just make accuracy easier for the shooters. Some people can shoot the biggest nastiest springers well. I'm not one of them but if you're one of those people you don't need to cut the power. With results you have there. I think you might well be.

I kinda like the new stock..

Being a irons shooter some guy showed me this hw98 "match" that has a standard unshrouded barrel with hw stick sights .

Funny no place but these guys have it ...hmmmm..

Thank you. I did have the barrel shroud/extension walk slightly loose as I was shooting which opened up the groups. Caught it quickly and keeping an eye on it. I have had good luck with the BKL rings. I’d prefer a Sportsmatch one piece mount but the odd dimensions of the Hawke scope don’t allow for it. Will probably at least grab the Sportsmatch 2 piece mediums with stop pin when I put in an order. Thanks again for the good words.

Thank you! It shoots really well I feel. It definitely has preference for some pellets and I’m working through that. I obviously posted my best group of the session, but others weren’t far off. Looking forward to trying again!

If you didn't have to bore the stock, I'd be interested in where you got the front stock scres and cups. They came out very nice.
I like the look. I’ve used those on both my 97K and 98. I purchased through eBay from seller 123markj22 in the UK. Perhaps he has a shop, but I don’t know of any contact info so just ordered that way. Not cheap, but what is? Contacted him and he made up a custom order for me. I did not to to bore or alter, but a fair amount of pressure is needed to seat the cups and you have to watch to keep everything aligned. I’m considering them permanent stock hardware but I don’t think I’d use them if I intended to remove cups later.

Very nice. One new HW stock that I actually like! My .22 HW95 runs 16-17 FPE and is very accurate. Figured there was no reason to mess with success.
I tend to agree. I could tune it to have a little less buzz, but I’d be hard pressed to make it more accurate. As mentioned, just easier to shoot consistently with that accuracy.

I think that must have been a run exclusive to Mundilar?

I just picked up a 98 myself, new old stock from 2016, doesn't have the threaded extension and of course the older style stock. I have only taken a few shots so far which were pretty twangy but what a beautiful gun. Going to scope it tomorrow and see how it's shooting.
Nice! I do dig the old look! Would buy an orphaned stock in a heartbeat. Enjoy that rifle. Also have a little twang, but the accuracy is fantastic regardless. Have a Maccari kit that will tame that but enjoying the factory powerplant as is for now.

These new stocks seem to be demanding a premium. Lol

What they list on ebay is different from what they sell for. I've seen plastic model airplanes I've recently bought on there for ten dollars listed for $175. What they list for and what they sell for is two different things. I recently bought an entire 20 caliber 98 for the same money as that stock. I personally love the new stocks so I'm not trying to diminish their value. I'm just saying ebay listings are a poor value appraisal.

Anytime you're interested in the ebay market value. Look up the completed sales of the same product.
